Why Mozilla not Opera?

Yeah I know it's not opera's fault, but it is still a con that can drive you away from using a browser. I really do wish more websites adhered to standars so browser choice could be much easier.

For me it's partly because Firefox is open source, but also because it has great web development plugins and tools. Out of the box it's pretty basic, but I can expand it if I want with plugins. I really like Opera too though, it just has so many features I'll never use. Plus it always seems to stand out, rather than adhering to the appearance of the OS (although you can use themes I guess). Firefox seems to be moving this way in version 3.

Opera made a strategic error. They refused to attend the 2001 International Geek Convention. It was there that 1500 girlfriendless geeks representing 215 countries chose to make a browser their "significant other". Mozilla got the nod by default. ;)

Opera shouldn't be compared to Firefox since the former is a web suite and the latter is a browser. The proper comparison would be between Opera and the Mozilla suite, and imo Opera does the job better (no extensions still a weakness). As a browser Firefox owns Opera for its functionality (or lack thereof), I don't want a BT client, a mail client, and widgets in a browser. On the other hand Opera lacks features that I do want in a browser, which is easily added to Firefox via extensions. I think it's pretty much undisputed that Opera supports current standards better, whereas Firefox supports future standards better.

I've tried to use Opera several times. I try it out every time a new major version comes along. I won't say it sucks, but it is certainly extremely odd and unintuitive. Additionally, the only good theme is the theme that comes with it, there is no skinning community there, and I like variety. On the other hand, there are only 3 firefox themes that I've seen that look good enough to actually use and not like they were made by amateurs with mspaint. I wouldn't say that one or the other loads webpages better, I think they're both pretty strict on compliance and they both function great. I think Opera feels more solid and Firefox (and anything Mozilla) feels flimsy, but Firefox is just infinitely more customizable and easier to use. You could probably compare memory usage if you wanted to, but it's not an issue for me; I have 2gb of ram and most of the time only half is being used. Next week I'll 4 gb of ddr2 800, as I'm switching from socket 939 to am2; I wonder what I'll do with it all.

No skin community? Do you mean like developers boards, support and such or just loads of skins? Because Opera at least got the latter: http://my.opera.com/community/customize/skins/

Gn85: yeah, you're right, but the end product is the same - some sites won't work properly.

I did, indeed, mean skins. There aren't nearly as many as for Firefox, and I think most of them suck. Let's not even touch on version compatibility, either. And then there's the matter that many are just ports of Firefox skins that don't look as nice because Opera's skinning engine is extremely limited in regards to what it can do.

opera is amazing....but only a few things keep me with firefox

the abilility to use noscript and adblocker

although i love opera's customization, speed and light footprint.

Back when I started using Opera and switched to Firefox is simply because of the interface. Opera broke the standards in my opinion, especially with these yellow-glowing buttons.

Otherwise, this is the browser that introduced me to tabs and it was a lot faster than IE6.

I always thought Opera was better but Firefox was just there a little earlier so it always had the edge. Opera is just so much faster at everything and has a clean interface.

There is one thing that Firefox always had that was better and that is those extentions to do a whole lotta neat things, which you can do in any other browser but with the extensions it is so fast in Firefox.

I suprisedly read these ?replies about the lack of customizing of Opera.:woot:: ?

I switched from Mozilla and FireFox to Opera, and can say, that Opera is much smooth than Firefox. I'm not developer, so I don't miss Developer tools from FireFox. But I can't live without Opera's flexibility, the Opera mail (switched from Thunderbird), panels, downloader and widgets (Weather, Clock, Calculator, Bcode editor, Chess, etc.) and my tons of custombuttons and iconized links without lose of the maximal screen place. And of course there is opera:config, and many-many other epicureanisms.?

Otherwise I can understand the popularity of FF. It handles the plugins and extensions more smoothly, but in other aspects Opera is much better.

(Of course I use VirtuaWin to place my widgets in a separated desktop)

I dont "hate" Opera, but Firefox offers me a zillion addons that meet Opera's features and go beyond it by miles

Thats why

AND

when I open a browser (and that is to browse the internet) and don't need a whole suite to open with it including mail and torrent client

another reason why

So what if opera has mail/torrent? Torrent can easily be disabled, and mail is disabled by default so it does not use any extra resources (Nor do any of the other features like irc ect.. if you are not using them). And opera still manages to be smaller and quicker than firefox(And open much faster). Extra features don't equal bloat.

i just like Firefox over Opera cause of Extentions and it's overall feel and layout is better i think... i dont like how with Opera you have the entire suite just for a webbrowser... to me Firefox feels more like IE6's interface which was all around pretty good.

p.s. i dont like IE7's interface at all as it changed to much.... although feature wise it's much closer to firefox now than it was before.

What? Like saying "I don't like Firefox because of all extensions. I don't want anything extra, just a webbrowser. It even shows pictures, I don't want picture viewer."

I liked Opera. It was fast, simple, easy to customise, and it had mouse gestures. I had to switch to IE7 because of compatability. Opera didn't display some of my favourite sites correctly, or it didn't display them at all. I've got IE7 with IE7Pro installed. The perfect combination!

I can accept, that FireFox is for somebodies "relic". ?

But for me FireFox is a pain in regard of skin and customizing. Opera is far more handy in this regard. I coudn't live without "Opera's ?purring":rolleyes:es:

Although I have to accept, that in regards of plugin can be Opera a pain for a newby.?

But because I got into Opera deeply, for me Opera far smoother, than FF.?

But I say, that everybody should love it's own "darling&quot:)? :)

If you are a Mozilla Firefox user, please state why you hate Opera.

Why do they have to hate anything? Can't people just have a preference and live peacefully? This has to be one of the least thought out flamebaits I've seen, and it's in the wrong forum even.

I've loved Opera since 8.0. I didn't really switch all the way til they went ad free though. That was sweet.

I admit I'm not much for extensions...so I'm not exactly a power user when it comes to browsing.

So the speed of the browser is my main concern, and Opera excels. Plus it has nifty shortcuts like 'Paste and Go' in the address bar and such. As long as they keep with the awesome speed, I'm sold. Opera forever. :)

If only Opera didn't have such a stupid name.

And I'd like a 64 bit Winclient :/
