andrew_f
Safari let me down after a while, no easy-to-use control over search engines, incompatible with my bank and crashed quite a bit. However Firefox on Mac is ugly with no cocoa/aqua controls as of yet (3 will though :)) and the fonts on the tabs is HUGE :p
gigapixels Veteran Posted October 28, 2007 Veteran Share Posted October 28, 2007 I got into it when I was starting web development and learning of standards and such, and IE's lack of adhering to the standards ****ed me off. This was back in the days of Phoenix 0.2 IIRC, and I've been using it ever since.

deck
I had tried it a few times... installed it and played with it for a bit but never stuck with it. Then one day I decided to just make it my default for a while and see what happens.... and look at me now! The tabs are really what got me. Other than that, at least from my point of view, it was just like IE6. I like it better than IE7 just for the standard interface. I find they both handle tabs well and they both display websites almost identically (at least the ones I visit).

BinaryFragger
Been using Firefox since version 0.1 (when it was known as Phoenix) because my browser of choice back then, Mozilla Suite, seemed to be getting slow and bloated. Internet Explorer was horrible and I didn't really like Opera (plus, it was ad-supported back then). I liked Firefox because it was similar to Mozilla Suite, but faster and had a nicer skin. But my favourite feature was (and still is) the extension system. Anybody remember the "Cookies are delicious delicacies" in the preference panel? :)

The_Decryptor Veteran Posted November 8, 2007 Veteran Share Posted November 8, 2007 Been using it on and off since about 0.3-0.4, switched full time at 0.8 Used it mainly for the rendering engine (I switched because I saw a really simple CSS layout that was mutilated in IE, but worked perfectly in Firefox, and looked great), stayed for the tabs, extensions, etc. Edit: Yeah, I remember "Cookies are delicious delicacies", Why did they have to get rid of that? phantasmorph
I haven't "switched". I use both IE7 and FF equally, depending on what I'm doing. Only browser that I absolutely hate is Opera. Can't stand that clunky thing.
Lighthalzen
When IE 6 was more or less crap... I used Firefox cause the addons and tabs. But now IE7 is here, I use IE7 on Windows and FF on OS X. Share the love :p Edited November 8, 2007 by bmaher removed double post
Guest ID2
Tabs Forgive me if I appear ignorant, (I am), but don't virtually all browsers have tabs these days? Opera has had tabs since before the turn of the millienium, but I though all the others had caught up by now. I know for sure IE has tabs.

Prince Charming
No real reason for me actually, I just switched because I was bored. I didn't use tabs much at the time, and while I do now, IE does it as well. I certainly don't use extensions either, so yeah, no real reason for me to use Fx over IE, I just do :)
Guest ID2
Only browser that I absolutely hate is Opera. Can't stand that clunky thing. If you try it for long enough to discover it's unique features and usability ease, you'll realise it's the other browsers that are clunky! It's because they're missing too many usability features which make the job quicker and easier. There are essential tools and options which just aren't available in other browsers. In answer to the initial question, What prompted you to switch to Firefox? I have switched to the Firefox browser several times since it changed its name to Mozilla Firefox, and it's a quite useable browser. I gave it a good trial, using it for about three or four months at a stretch and having fun with the plug-ins, but I couldn't stay with a browser that seemed crippled by comparison to Opera. Often I switched to Firefox because it was included as a default browser option in one or another Linux Live-CD, or because it was on someone else's machine. However I could never get used to coping without features I had come to rely on, so I always went back to Opera. I've spent some time with Maxthon, Sleipnir, and Safari too. Sometimes I use IE 7.6 when I'm using Vista, and sometimes Firefox as I explained, but I'll always have Opera installed as the default browser on my own machines, because it's so capable. I imagine that even if Firefox was a better browser, I would probably resist using it because it is so heavily marketed and hyped. People talk about it as if it's the ticket to salvation, and you can almost hear them saying, with that fanatical gleam in their eye, " I used to be hooked on drugs, (or the Lord), but NOW I'm hooked on Firefox!", or, "Have YOU switched to Firefox! I want YOU to make the switch today! It will save your on-line life! You'll be born again, in Firefox!" The level of fervour displayed in the Firefox followers evangelical marketing zeal is not matched by the level of superiority of the product. abulfares
I switched mainly because of no ActiveX IE had ActiveX issues and Opera did not display some pages correctly
Huleboeren
Wouldve made the switch to Opera a long time ago if it wasnt for the billions of extensions in Firefox
shakey_snake
I switched to firefox because a friend recommended it. I was looking for a better brower than IE because I was tired of having an infected computer. I imagine that even if Firefox was a better browser......The level of fervour displayed in the Firefox followers evangelical marketing zeal is not matched by the level of superiority of the product. You, leave. Your fervor can go elsewhere. Edited November 8, 2007 by shakey_snake
The_Decryptor Veteran Posted November 8, 2007 Veteran Share Posted November 8, 2007 Why go into threads about Firefox, and talk about how much better IE is, or Opera is? All you're going to do is annoy people (same goes for talking about how much better Firefox is in threads about IE or Opera, etc.)
