Neowin Let us do your homework

Recommended Posts

I dont know who else has noticed this but as of lately neowin is turning into a homework club. And it's not just limited to say section A of question 1 its like i am stuck on this whole question with 3 sections and this question etc.

People are posting calculus problems, or chemistry problems etc then expecting people to give answers and them doing none of the work.

See

and i can go on. Now i find this very annoying and i think its on the verge of plagiarism.

Dude, its asking for HELP. People HELP if they want to, and they don't HELP if they don't want to.

People that HELP very well know that what they say will be taken into account, that is the principle of HELPING.

PS. Do you get the magic word? HELP.

I can see this becoming a problem. I'll be sure to bring this thread to the attention of the staff immediately so that the proper higher ups can determine what the best course of (in)action should be.

Well, there's, "Help, my computer blew up" and there's, "Help me pass school so I can go **** up my job later in life because I never learned to do this". Which person would you prefer built the bridge your car travels on?

Theres HELP and then theres i'm lazy and i will get people to do it for me. And this is the way it's going

HELP would be if i have x and add it to y i get z is that correct

This is not what people are asking for, they are basically saying do it for me

We would probably be happy to help people if they look like they've tried. However... the problems that people are bringing in... it seems like they're dropping pdf files on us and expecting us to do it; and especially with the mathematical problems- they're mostly of a high school level, which don't really require a leap in logic and probably some revision of formulas would suffice.

Thats exactly one of the reasons i am trying to bring up here.

People posting whole pdfs full of questions or whole questions expecting someone to do it for them

I agree that people at least should try and show their tries.

I didn't know of the people that posted problems without posting what they've tried.

so what your saying is instead of people asking for the answer they should make up a phony answer and then ask? Anyone could do that! maybe walk them through it instead of telling them the answer ;) id rather that then you come to my house and do my homeowrk for me

I don't see why it should be a problem...If someone needs help why not help? After all one of the great things about Neowin is that you can ask for any kind of help and expect a answer.

you're not helping people by making their homework for them. At least not in the long term ;)

i feel some people help too much by just giving answers and not explaining which doesn't teach people.

i personally don't mind "im a little stuck can you explain how it works" thats fine but when people say "can you answer this so i can take it as my own" is a BIG no no, i did that before and it doesn't work

Perhaps, however the issue is that we as humans learn from mistakes, and if you're always given the answers... how are you going to make enough mistakes to learn how to do it by yourself? The foundation of independence is learning from mistakes and being able to do things alone. Getting into the habit of relying upon others to solve our problems is destroying that foundation.

I have noticed this, but is has been minor. One or two people asking for the cheating kind of help. all the rest are legit people really looking for down-to-earth help. and really, who cares? People have discretion. If they think he is cheating on a math test then they dont help. When you have something of more importance please let us know. otherwise......

I don't see much of a problem, but I cringe at the utter stupidty of the questions being asked. Such simple problems, stuff you should know if you're taking the course you're in.

Just do what I do when I give help in my AP Comp Sci AB class. Do NOT give them the answer. Instead, give them tips on HOW to get the answer.

For example, here is an example of a question I had tonight

"I think I have this, but it won't run. What is wrong?

while (run=true)

{

if (number1 % number2 == true)

System.out.println(number1 " is divisible by " number2);

}

"

Instead of telling them that they need to put while (run==true) instead of while (run=true), I made them think about it. I asked them what the difference between = and == was. After they told me, I told them to look at their program and tell me what each = and == did in their program. They then spotted their mistake, and their program worked. Thus, I helped them, but they did the work and learned something.

Thus, if someone post a pdf of question, instead of replying with "ZOMG DO YOUR OWN HOMEWORK", ask them what they don't understand, and try to help them understand it.

I agree with regards to doing the whole thing, but you don't have to reply and I find some of them quite interesting to see what other people round the world are up to and the answers people on here come up with.

It definitely stimulates more intellectual conversation than other posts knocking around.

Much in the same way that you're not helping people find obscure hardware drivers, remove pesky trojans, or find the best program for a certain task?

Just because someone aks for help doesn't mean you're obliged to help them. Just press the good ol' back button.
