Top 4 reasons piracy hasn

Recommended Posts

In Asia?s gaming culture, piracy has been common place for every major game console since the NES. In the mid 90?s a device called the UFO, allowed ROM games stored on floppy disks to be played on the SNES via a disk-drive like device that sat on top of the SNES. The 32-bit era saw the rise of mod-chips and insane swap-tricks to get past CD region lockouts.

Not much has changed in the generations that followed. Even today, the Xbox 360, Wii, DS and PSP have all fallen victim to heavy piracy. The advent of torrent sites and faster download speeds don?t do the major players any favors either. The PS3, on the other hand, remains a different story. I have been keeping an eye on the local pirating scene, and with almost a year after the PS3?s release, it appears to be the only console piracy free. On that note, I have concluded these reasons for the PS3?s success in the anti-piracy war.(Note : despite the tone of this article, I have no doubt that eventually, technology will catch up and savvy pirates will have their way)

4. Hardware complexity

Let me preface this by saying that I?m by no means an engineer or have any expertise with console hardware, but from what I?ve heard from around the Net, I?ve decided to include this point with some doubt. With the Xbox 360, all that is needed is to flash the DVD drives firmware, for the Wii, a simple modchip install. The only hiccup would come with future software updates. The PS3, unlike the Xbox 360, does not do incremental firmware updates, each PS3 firmware update completely replaces the previouslt installed version, leaving me to the think that any exploited areas in the software would be eliminated. Unless someone out there commits to creating custom firmware, similar to the PSP homebrew scene, running something like the an HD loader or installing a modchip seems an unlikely option.

3. Blu-Ray

Despite the whole next-gen format war, Blu-ray has served Sony on multiple fronts. First of all, touting a size limit of around 50gb for a dual layer BD-ROM. Very few sane people would go through the trouble of downloading or uploading such a large ISO file. Also, Blu-Ray disc burners are still out of the price range of the mass market.

2. Region-free games

As hard as it is to believe, there are people out there who have their consoles modded for the sole purpose of importing. With games such as Kingdom Hearts 2 : Final Remix available only to the japanese market, its hard to ignore that any hardcore gamer has gone through the whole importing process before. with the PS3 being region-free, with most games released in Asia already coming with an option for English as the primary language, Sony has appeased the importing community. Importing, was also the primary justification for shops to carry mod-chips in the first place, this move thereby eliminates this excuse for pirates to hide behind.

1. High price point

With the early adopter having to shell out $600, anything with even the slightest risk of bricking the system will give any PS3 owner nightmares. This seems to be the prevailing sentiment on many forum threads I?ve read, many people just don?t want to risk the PS3 the same way they did with their past consoles. As a side-effect to having a high price point, the installed base isn?t as high as the Xbox 360 or the Wii, bringing little payoff to those who would have to go through all the trouble.

Piracy is rampant on the PS2/Wii and probably quite bad on the 360.

It'll probably catch up on the PS3, but I don't expect so for a long time!

reason 5 and I think the most important... NO GAMES! :p

a console without games that appeals the masses is not even worth the effort of hacking it, it's the same reason people don't even bother to create a virus for Mac...

glad i refreshed before posting, that's exactly what i was going to say.

Why would people buy an expensive console and (as point 5 pointed out) risk bricking it, when there are barely any games worth even looking at, let alone playing.

And there are PS3 games on the web, personaly it doesnt interest me so i didnt bother looking too close, but i very much doubt any reach anything over 10% of the possibly 50 Gb

i would in all honesty put it from the lessons sony learned with the psp actually effect why it's good in this area ontop of the fact that games are so large.

Although I had the same thought as everyone else (i.e. no games :p) I think the whole bittorrent thing would be a problem too. If anyone has downloaded a torrent file towards the start of the seeding you can see how slowly it takes for the first 6-12 hours (assuming a 350Mb file or so). Now imagine it on a 50Gb file and a lot of people will get bored, ending up with very few people completing the torrent.

Wait a 4-5 years until the home bandwidth increases then you will see more torrents coming out for blu ray. Until then its safe (a similar thing happened for mp3s to videos).

^ Ahh the "no games" bandwagon arrives in town again :p

Say that in 6 months guys  Your days are now short lived :shiftyninja:

I feel the reasons are pretty much spot on.

Region free games is the biggest plus to owners. I'm sure there are genuinely folk out there who do chip to import and even buy original imports - not download.

It's funny cause this will save Sony/PS3 developers a loss due to piracy, but a little piracy can unfortunately help out at times :/

Check the DS. That thing is unbelievably easy to pirate. Buy a cart and thats it. The Wii is the easiest out of the next gen consoles to pirate with no banning action in place. The 360 while boasting a decent amount of options for pirates does have the risk of bricking your online play.

I think the best thing Sony can do is listen to what we want in firmware updates and implement the best ideas. People rant on about how CFW saves the PSP - Yeah a lot of the "legal" things it lets you do are neat, but lets not kid ourselves, the majority will be loving it due to iso/cso direct play.

^ I personally appreciate CFW allowing just about all PS1 games to be played, not only those on the PS store.

The no games bandwagon? It's just stating fact!! There are very few games, and developers are dropping interest in exclusives or even developing on the machine all together.

Thats fact, not fanboyism.

You should know what I mean :pinch:

You actually think if the console was easier to pirate it wouldn't of been for the titles out so far? There are good/decent titles out and more coming this year/start of next that we know about/have seen/have read/watched previews/reviews for.

"No" = "None" = "0" in this context.

I hardly think there are zero games worth playing now/soon

I agree with you entirely, think a lot of the ps3 naysayers willl eat their words in the coming months. the downloadable content is ever expanding on psn. I use cfw on my psp too, I use it to rip my own UMD's to convert to cso and load from memory stick, as it saves battery and loads faster.

No, you're making it mean that to fit an argument. "No" in this context means when you compare the games available and coming out for the 360 vs. the games available and coming out for the PS3, even though the number is greater than 0 it might as well be 0.

If the console was completely pirateable it would've been just because. Add some sort of hitch and then people have to weigh out the payout in going through the hassle of pirating a system with "no" games. A system with a lot of games that would be of interest to a much wider population is worthwhile spending the time to figure out pirating for. Hence the comparison to a Mac virus. Can they be made? Sure. But why target 5% of the population when you could go after the 95%?

Reason number 4 is half true, although it may seem that it is insane to upload or download those huge isos, they are already on the net, all of them, people are downloading them to have them once someone breaks the console.

I agree about the blu ray part tho, the burners and media are still too expensive. Im guessing the scene is hard at work on a solution that loads the isos from the Hard drive.

I own a PS3 and I agree with the no games bit. I haven't played my PS3 since I beat Resistance, and only now do I have another game to play on it, which is brilliant by the way (Ratchet and Clank Future).

don't forget though, it did take a little while for the ability to copy UMD's, let alone run them via loaders etc. think the lack of bd burners is a major contributor.

What is the point in bringing that up though?

Different games for different people.

There will be PS3 owners that are extremely happy with Resistance/Warhawk/F1/HS/R&C/Ect.

I think saying the lineup so far has affected piracy is a little far fetched compared to the 4 reasons given. Pirates know the games currently out have sold well and the hit titles will be in huge demand. The PS3 will be as attractive as any other console for the pirates.

So saying "ok wait we don't ACTUALLY mean 0, but we mean it might as well be 0" is just laughable... Don't be saying 0 in the first place then.

The comparison to a Mac is just daft as well. Also 95% vs 5%.... again slightly silly there eh? The DS outsells the PSP but that hasn't stopped PSP piracy - Infact the homebrew community for the PSP is argubaly stronger if you ask me (I own both).

I know exactly what half you guys are trying to say. The console lineup so far isn't as hot as others (well the PS3/Wii are comparable... the Wii is suffering just now as well - in terms of having good games but the hardware is selling like crazy) It seems instead of saying it like that you like to put the ole negativity spin on your opinion and say "0" games when you supposedly "don't really mean 0".

- name five GOOD games you have played since you bought your PS3 that are REALLY worth the effort of creating a hack for the PS3.

and don't come around with the "FF13 and MGS4" are coming out because you work with what you have not with what you don't.

Why do I have to quote five games?

Any game that scores reasonable, and for discussion sake im going to say 7/70+ on here http://www.metacritic.com/games/ps3/ will be worthwhile for pirating - Why? As it will sell/Be a popular title.

And by "worthwile for pirating" im not saying those games below 7/70 wouldn't get pirated, off course they would  Just not on as large a scale as good titles.

I only play Resistance, PES 2008, Warhawk and Motorstorm just now. I would like to buy HS and R&C soon when I have more money.
