Manhunt 2 Slammed For Its Portrayal Of Mental Illness

Rockstar's Manhunt 2 has been slammed by a US charity for its "irresponsible, stereotypical portrayal of mental illness", GamesIndustry.biz reports.

The National Alliance for Mental Illness has asked for the game to be recalled from sale or modified, and that retailers decline to sell the game.

"Even though some people may consider Manhunt 2 to be only a game, it unfortunately perpetuates and reinforces cruel, inaccurate perceptions that people who live with mental illness are violent," blasted Mike Fitzpatrick, executive director of NAMI.

"The US Surgeon General has condemned such stigmatisation, identifying fear of stigma as a major barrier to people getting help when they need it," he added.

The organisation said that it does not back censorship of entertainment, but expects a "higher standard" of understanding of health problems.

"Concern over the violence reflected in the game up until now has not yet been extended to include the outrageous portrayal of the 54 million people in the United States who live with serious mental illnesses.

"We do not favour censorship, but we do ask for responsible exercise of creative rights when serious public health concerns are at issue," added Fitzpatrick.

^rofl

You know, If Aliens ever visit us, there going to sue the crap out of everybody for portraying them as evil earth taking over bringers of doom, you know, if they don't take over the world of something.

But people and games, there are so many worse things out there besides games, and all some people seem to do is moan about them.

to much "is it right or wrong" debates about games.

If you kid cant handle it, dont let them play it

If you dont want your kid playing it, dont buy it.

If you dont like it, dont watch or buy it.

but stopping others from enjoying it is just stupid. Its not like the game is in real life, having kids or adults, running around actually beating and cutting people up. its all on screen. And we can all agree that the images on the news and movies product much harsher images for people to be viewing.

I totally agree with you. People should turn their attention over to stop crime, and rapes, drugs and so many other awful things. When that all goes away, then u can moan about a game that wont be sold to kids, but only mature adults who were old enough to know that its only a game. Why not turn the attention away from the game, and put it on parents who buy these games for their kids?

Well that's just great. Lets all go back to 1932 and look at what happens to those idiots in 2007. Wars, censorship and power mad idiots trying to censor everything.

This place is getting really pathetic, let me off the ride.

Someone should make a game in which the goal is to kill off those overly sensitive easily offended politically correct sissies in the least sensitive, most offensive and politically most incorrect ways.

"Even though some people may consider this just as another stupid us demand, it fortunately perpetuates and reinforces accurate perception that people who take way too much xanax are completely f*cked in the head,"

Some people? Some people may consider?

You mean MOST people will consider it just a game - exactly what it is. Jesus christ, if you don't like it - don't buy it and don't let your kid(s) play it, simple as that.

54 million people in the United States who live with serious mental illnesses.

Well this explains a great many things.

All of them either belonging to some retarded activist groups (no pun intended) or working for the government. Don't forget Steve Jobs (never last, but always least).

Back to the cereal world though, people with mental illnesses are everywhere. Wouldn't a video game without sort of say,"Hey, nobody normal is handicapped!" I mean, a movie or television show without black people would be racist, no? So aren't excluding the mentally handicapped uh.. "handicappist?"

That makes soooo little sense. The fictional characters in this game are pyhscopaths. How does this give any kind of perception that anyone with a mental illness is violent. I fail to see his point.

Oh stuff them, If we want to play Manhunt 2 we can, stuff them all, they are just stupid who ever wants to blame stuff on this game or just bann it altogether.

So I guess now they should recall all those movies about psychopathic killers and murderers and why stop there, why don't we just stop making stuff that could be offensive to anyone .. wait then we wouldn't have anything to watch, or play, or read.

Come on people, its just a story. It's not meant to be taken seriously. If say manhunt2 was a required game to beat and play for 40hrs as part of your job application, then I would change my stance. I don't even know what to say to these people.

Actually banning it will probably reverse what they even want to accomplish, because people don't think twice about it, but when a kid goes over to his friends house and says that he just got a copy of that banned game, they are going to go all out and play it mad, even if they wouldn't have done so in the first place.

The people who spend their time obsessing over a mediocre game like Manhunt and reflecting onto it their own inadequacies and personal ideals are the ones making mental people look sane.
