MBA
Hi everyone, I have a strange problem with my browsers. I got windows VISTA recently and everything was working fine. All of a sudden my browsers stopped working. My computer is connected to the Internet, yahoo messenger and google talk are working perfectly fine for example and I can ping different websites but when I type a URL in my browsers I get that error message page saying I'm not connected to the net. I have tried re-starting the computer, re-installing my browsers (Firefox and IE) , tried installing a new browser (OPERA), and tried turning off my firewall...but nothing seems to work. I don't have any proxy settings, it's an Ethernet connection so I've always had it set to "direct connectedly to the internet" and this has been working fine in the past. Has anyone ever had this problem? or knows how to go about solving it? or what else to try? Many thanks, M.

?AK
Hmmm very weird, cos my girlfriend was having the exact same problem and I found that her computer was full with spyware and trash like that... Maybe that's the problem in your case too.

Maybe that's the problem in your case too. It's only been a few months since I've bought this though and I've always had the firewall and Symentic on...haven't been to any dodgy websites either...would you know how I can fix it? or check to see if that's the case? Knife Party
do a malware scan with a AV drop IE, get FF or Opera, only bad things come from IE get a new AV, maybe NOd32 or Kaspersky --- i hate bundled AV packs
Glen
OK, I didn't see that you tried different browsers in your post. It could have something to do with the domain name server (DNS) from your provider. I've had this happen before where I could connect using IP addresses and not the site name. Yesterday, my connection was dropping every few minutes due to the daylight savings time change (although tech support wouldn't admit it), so this might be related to that as well. raskren
Did you make sure your firewall wasn't blocking network activity due to the network not being categorized as home or work? Vista defaults to Public when the network isn't categorized. In any case this shouldn't block port 80.
ProiektHat
recently i had a problem very similar to yours, but everything is OK now...i think it was a dns problem. try updating your network card drivers that?s what i did and it worked for me:happy::
MBA
Try running IE in safe mode: Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)It's under All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools Still doesn't work - the same "cannot display the webpage" page comes up... :-( are you pinging ip addresses or url's? I've tried pinging both and it seems to work fine... recently i had a problem very similar to yours, but everything is OK now...i think it was a dns problem.try updating your network card drivers that?s what i did and it worked for me:happy:: Thanks, how should I do that? Did you make sure your firewall wasn't blocking network activity due to the network not being categorized as home or work? I turned off the firewall all together momentarily and tried it that way - but it didn't help. The browsers still couldn't detect the connection... I can't get connected using the ip addresses either...if I type the ip address in the URL bar, I still get the same "cannot display" message and although the time-saving is over - and sadly my problem hasn't gone away after the daylight saving period... The problem with browsers is still there.. :(( Is that what you were talking about? or am I looking at the wrong thing?

Some pieces of spyware screw up peoples internet connections.
RocMat1
I finnaly figured this out!! The problem is Norton I'm 99% sure! I had all security disabled, including Norton, but for some reason when it is installed it does something. I had had Norton on there before, but it just started oding it..maybe some conflict with Norton and a securiyt update or something? I'm not real sure, but I uninstalled Norton and everything is back to normal!
