xithium
Have you run alsaconf as root? Does it detect your card? This is an odd one as that chipset should work fine out of the box.
Berserk87
havnt run it, im in root right now. remember, this is the first time ive used any linux distro.
markwolfe Veteran Posted November 12, 2007 Veteran Share Posted November 12, 2007 Without having to suffer through another install, can you try a Knoppix LiveCD? I really have had good luck with that detecting audio (though I have never looked into chipsets). Did the Ubuntu you had work audio as a LiveCD? I know that you did not get it to work as an install. :ermm:
tiagosilva29
Do you have the BIOS' latest version installed? (Because of this bug report)

S7un7
I'm not sure why, but for some reason my sound won't work if my modem is disabled in the bios (only linux). It doesn't work in F7 or F8. That's probably not your case, but you never know.
xithium
havnt run it, im in root right now.remember, this is the first time ive used any linux distro. Open up a terminal and switch to root (su, then your root password). Then type 'alsaconf' You should get a wizard which will try to autodetect your soundcard and if so, it will ask if you want the approriate modules to be loaded at boot. I'm not sure why, but for some reason my sound won't work if my modem is disabled in the bios (only linux). It doesn't work in F7 or F8. That's probably not your case, but you never know. Now you mention that, I recall quite a widespread bug whereby the onboard moden has to be enabled for onboard sound to work on some chipsets. It's definitely worth having a go :) . Nashy
I have that chipset (or its damned similar) on my laptop and it worked right from install without touching a thing. Onboard modem is also enabled.

ViperAFK
Same thing happens to my AC/97, sudo alsamixer in terminal, unmute exchange front/surround and turn up master surround works for me, you can try unmutin everything if it doesn't. JUdas123
I'm not sure why, but for some reason my sound won't work if my modem is disabled in the bios (only linux). It doesn't work in F7 or F8. That's probably not your case, but you never know. This didn't work for me, but disabling my Audio in BIOS did work. It was my onboard AC97 Audio. I have a Creative Audigy sound card installed. Thanks for the suggestion to go into BIOS because I hadn't thought of that until you mentioned that a problem could exist there. The on-board audio was set to "Auto" in my BIOS. Disabling it gave me my sound. My BIOS is "Phoenix-Award" btw, and on my system I found the onboard audio under "Integrated Peripherals > Nvidia onchip PCI Device > ALC-650 AC97 Audio". JUdas123
wow nice dig :phow did u fix it? i may want to test out linux again. I just disabled my on-board audio in my BIOS set-up screen. I guess if you have a sound card installed and you're not going through your integrated audio, then you may need to do this.
