I think this is probably a good sign it's coming to the 360 as well. Either way, at least one of my consoles have it now :D

Great news

Agreed. One will lead to the other. At least I don't have to convert those movies anymore.

Definitely a good move, coupled with the fact you can chuck a 250GB drive in your PS3/Connect an external drive :woot:

That's one area that will let the 360 down even if it does get Divx support!

I also hope the PS3 can upscale our videos when support is added

After support is added I wonder if Sony will re-brand the PS3 box to add the Divx logo? I'd assume so

If this is added for xmas I'm sure it will have an impact,

Good points to note for buyers...

-> From ?299 (And you'd be daft not to get a free game bundle at this price, or no frills for about ?280 - http://www.shopto.net/page.php?page=dettag...;codart=PS3CO04 )

-> Blu Ray player (lets not argue which is better, but just look at it from the point you are getting a HD movie format included)

-> Divx support (for all ye:pirate:e:'s)

-> Decent games coming out now

-> I'm still crossing my fingers for something Home related before the year end:p:p

-> Dualshock is back

-> PSN looks slightly more rich in content now

Sony have things back on track if you ask me. At least they haven't done much wrong at all in the last few months. Frustrations if any, have come from developers releasing shoddy games/ports and delaying games - Uhhh Orange Box EA:no:o:

So this means Xvid too right? If not, this update is useless :p

I was under the impression, yes.

I have a DVD player downstairs that has Divx support and it plays any AVI file I chuck at it

Lets not turn it into a competition of storage space, because really, there is always going to be people who max out all their hard drives. Especially die hard pirates. At least both have excellent pc-connectivity, which I know is how I'll play divx movies to my PS3/360.

Also, you're getting a bit ahead of the ball her:p:p Games have picked up for both consoles recently, only Uncharted and Ratchet are recent exclusives which are attracting buyers. The other releases are divided amongst the other consoles too. PSN is lacking big time, they have announced plans for new content, but it's not here just yet. Not to mention it's for games like Motorstorm and Resistance getting the larger update:p:p There is bigger and better games out now, does anybody really care for the:unsure:e:p:p

It's not a competition, Sony have that one in the bag regardless.

Yeah people max drives out but you can have an unlimited amount on the PS3. The inside drive is limited to whatever the current laptop drive is at, but since you can connect external drives there really is no limit on space other than what you have purchased drive wise.

It will be better to run movies from the internal drive or external rather than from the PC just now. At the moment the PC software transcodes the video files. Hopefully though with Divx support on the PS3 programs like TVersity won't need to transcode the video.

It doesn't matter that much how games have picked up on other consoles for PS3 owners/those wanting a PS3 - All they are interested in is how good PS3 games are  And they are getting better. People on the fence will have to put more thought into their decision.

PSN may be lacking compared to Live but it is a hell of a lot better than it was before. We have many original PSN games in the store now, a good amount of demos and new PS1 games are being added, and finally some games compatible with products like Eyetoy or w/e it's called  Good strides, lets not forget Live is 4 years older than PSN ;) I'm more than happy with the way things are heading, and I do expect slow but strong improvements for now. Theres no way PSN will explode over night into something as rich as Live. I mean do you expect PSN to be like this in another 4 years time? Uhhh don't think so. At least Home should be out by then

All I wanted to get across is things at least look promising for xmas. A few months ago I wouldn't of put the PS3 forward as a big contender for xmas, but now its looking (Y)

This will definitely add to Sony's competitive edge. However, Divx support on the 360 is rumored to be coming soon as well, and the 360 also has support for external drives, so the advantage might not be long lived.

It does?

By "support" do you mean MS branded drives only?

Ok I don't want to turn this into an endless doom thread of PS3 vs 360, but right now 360 is in the best position for xmas. If divx comes in the fall update or whenever, it's even stronger. Also, may I mention, the article does not say you store divx videos on the drive in the first place. I think they are only adding support for the file types, i.e streaming capabilities. Even still, the 360 Elite comes with 120 out the box, and can support external drives afaik. So it's not like the PS3 removable drives are a "killer app" hardware wise :p

PSN is improving, but slowly like you said. Although, saying that, Live isn't standing still is it? They are adding more and more XBLA titles, with the 100 mark reached this week. Demos for almost all games bar a few, and a trial of every arcade game, XBL Movie Marketplace expanding in the next month (plus rumours of WB joining) and the new Xbox original games service :) So if PS3 looks promising, then 360 is paradise this winter

Maybe not a "killer app" but its not to be overlooked ;)

Also like I said above can elites support any external drive? If so, damn I shoulda bought an elite

At the end of the day it comes down to three buyers

those who want a PS3 and haven't purchased yet

those who may want a PS3 but are looking at all the options

those not currently interested in a PS3

These improvements are killer for those in category 1.

For those in category 2 its a nice boost in features which may or may not help make their mind up.

Finally those in the 3rd category probably don't have enough ammunition to change their minds yet, but I'm sure they'll take notice of changes like Divx support and what not.

Thats all. I don't want a big debate over which is better, as it will only really be a discussion about what each of us thinks is best - We get enough of that
