EDITING Problem

Recommended Posts

I notice that you can edit your first post of a thread you created

any post thereafter can be edited within x-time

But if you have an update & don't need to create a new post as the thread is already towards the top of the forum, you can't edit it if you come back after x-time - you need to make a NEW post

Shouldn't there be an edit option on all your posts ALL the time?

I agree and we used to have it that way until a member decided to empty all of his posts after 2 years of contribution.

Really, these types of restrictions are in place only because members have abused our system.

REALLY? You're kidding?

2 whole years? That's why the editing function has been taken away? Damn. How much time must it have taken him to edit out all those posts?! Not only that, but, WHY?!

I don't know who it was (obviously) but that is a pretty lame & sad act.

My understanding is that you have 5 minutes to edit the post without any sort of notification.

Then you have an additional 25 minutes (30 minutes total) to edit the post with a system message informing others that the post has been modified.

The thread creator can always edit the first post of the thread (there is no time limit on this).

The system will also sometimes auto-merge two successive posts by the same member into one combined post if they are posted within relatively quick succession.

Why should other members have to suffer because a few have abused the system? As I have got a disability, it will take me more than 30 minutes to realised that I have made a grammar and spelling mistake, surely there has got to be a better solution to that problem!

Nope, this seems to be the best solution overall.

Why should anyone be able to edit any post they've ever made? There's no good reason at all, and grammar and spelling are not good reasons, no.

So ?!? What has him removing his post's got to do with not being able to edit post's ?

If he wanted to remove them, so what ?

You scared that the total forum post count will drop down abit ?

And I think it is completely ridiculous that we can't edit our own post's !

Posts made on this forum become property of Neowin. Why should we allow anyone to make this forum useless if they decide to have a tantrum?

And you can edit your own posts. You have 30 minutes to do so.

Unlimited editing would wind up destroying conversations on the forums. People would say something and then go back later and completely retract it if things didn't turn out well. Think before you type and you'll be fine. It's not that hard.

  • 2 weeks later...

forgot about this thread

re: post #9 - i think that's totally sad/pathetic. (not what you said, but that someone would do that). I think that's taking it/the internet way too seriously. If that's the case, then some people need to have their behind crowbar'd out of their computer seat & kicked outside for a bit of fresh air!!

I understand the nature of the board in general & some of the people it will attract because of this, who are the minority that'd just take the slightest comment a bit too far & have a hissy fit, thinking that life on neowin is uber important (no offense, but in the grand scheme of things, even neowin owners should admit it's not).

Meh, just a small rantage there. Anyone who hissy fits like that is probably better off not even here & should be put on an oxygen mask until they hit normality.

Technique it may well be sad and pathetic but the fact of the matter is, we have had people doing just that! Even an ex-staff member who left on bad terms deleted almost 3 years of his posts because we allowed extended privileges in the "ex staffer group" (Veterans). Luckily we were able to restore the posts because of our back up software but allowing someone to edit their posts regardless of the post "age" will only result in the above mentioned scenario. I agree that it is limited to a small group of people though!

Are you able to change the edit limit to maybe a day or a week? That way if someone wants to edit grammar or spelling they have more time and it limits double/multiple posts in a semi-inactive thread. Also gives a member who is having a tantrum less posts that they can delete but gives good members a bit more freedom.

You said a mouthful there. Grammar and spelling are 2 VERY GOOD reasons to be able to edit, what with all the people around here who criticize the dog crap out of you for the simplest typo even! Just another way people can pad their post count so they can hurry up and start another stupid "I have 8 bazillion posts" type thread!

Thats true. But thinking before you type is a hard one.

I disagree that spelling mistakes & grammar are good reasons for an edit

So long as it can be understood, there's no big deal imo. We're not typing professional letters here that MUST be spelled correctly etc. There's GOING to be mistakes. So long as folk can get the jist of it, it's no problem imo but i do see where you're coming from with it!!

Just another way people can pad their post count so they can hurry up and start another stupid "I have 8 bazillion posts" type thread!

And !!!!!!!!THIS!!!!!!! is exactly what i'm talking about

Unfortunately, there will be some in the MINORITY that are sad like this. And unfortunately, it's the nature of the message board - computers. There's going to be many on here who just use a computer, but there'll be some who LIVE BY their computer and are PC geeks (the ones i mentioned that need some fresh air).

These people will live for nothing more than to get their post count up & compete with anyone near their post count. they wont be able to sleep because they'll be scared some people are closing in on their count.

then like you say, they'll post a thread saying "i have x-posts" <---- yeah well no **** moron, i can see that just by looking under your freaking username!!!!

I don't see it on car forums i'm on - they TEND to be more mature, but i've seen it on some music forum i've been on - as they TEND to be younger. Seems to be an age thing.

All i can say is thank God that they are the minority as they're terribly irritating sad little people

[/rant]
