PS3 outsells Wii in Japan for second week running

Recommended Posts

Sony is starting to see the effects of the newly released 40GB PS3 model already in Japan as it has outsold the craze that is the Nintendo Wii for the second straight week. While many anticipated that the Wii would have a strong week with the release of Super Mario Galaxy, the PS3 was able to hold on despite the competition from one of the "heavy hitter" titles for the Wii.

It is interesting to see the PS3 doing so well upon release of such a high profile title. Past releases of games in the Super Mario franchise have usually caused a huge spike in console sales for Nintendo, especially since the current instalment in the franchise is supposed to be one of the better ones in quite some time (comparable to Mario 64).

The surge in PS3 sales comes after a price cut for the 20GB & 60GB systems on October 17 and the subsequent announcement and release of the 40GB PS3. The 40GB was released in Japan on November 11 (on the one year anniversary of the system in Japan) in both the original Piano Black color and a special, Japan-only, Ceramic White model.

Although there has been much debate about whether Sony made the right decision by removing backwards compatibility from the 40GB model and reducing the number of USB ports from 4 to 2, the system seems to be holding its own in this region. Below are the actual sales numbers for the week of 11/11-11/18:

Hardware:

DSLite: 81000

PSP: 66000

PS2: 8800

PS3: 53000

Wii: 36000

Xbox360: 5700

As a Wii fanboy I will say...

Good, Sony has a fantastic console, and deserves to see some return on it. I do NOT want them to exit the market in any way. i just detest their marketing strategies.

^ Well said, however their new marketing team is doing a bang up job. I love their new commercials, at least in North America with the "exploding" or expanding PS3 and showcasing all the games. Thats how they need to market it, now with that creepy weird zune like marketing crap they did last year.

As for the topic I'm very proud of Sony starting to make a dent, they deserve it. The PS3 is an awesome system, by far the best console in this generation, the 360 has a far superior game library which makes it a hell of a lot better deal in the big picture, but its hardware is lacking in the next generation department and I think thats the difference with the PS3. But just for those 360 fanboys who might get offended with that, if you asked me what the best value for your money is and what console will give you the best experience today, I'd say the 360 hands down. Hopefully over the next year Sony will release some sweet games and change my mind. The Wii is nice too, but think of it more as a toy than a console. (Sorry if that offends anyone)

As far as the sales go, as Jordan said, I think its just because of the Wii shortages, but either way they are still moving a hell of a lot more than Microsoft is doing, those 360 sales are horrid. I knew it was doing bad in Japan, but damn..

Why do you always bring that up, it's utter BS

Not even going into detail and waste more time explaining, but you should really drop the act.

I can start it and end it with 2 words, Blu Ray.

The PS3 is more of a desktop computer whereas the 360 is more of a laptop, not the best hardware and those lovely 360 only hard drives. The 360 is technically next gen as its the next generation of the xbox, but everyone refers to next gen as the next big thing, radical change, blu ray and hddvd, are next generation, dual layer dvd, isn't. The cell processor is more of a radical change compared to what the 360 is packing. Also why developers are having a pain in the ass time trying to write games for it.

The 360 is nice don't get me wrong you clearly love yours and so does my brother, but it doesn't fit into "next gen" like everything else does. They don't support bluetooth wireless instead they opt for their own wireless method which sucks, anyone who has an MS keyboard set knows their wireless technology is far from bluetooth. To me the 360 feels like the fisher price console, your tied down to specific 360 headsets, hard drives, ect. Whereas the PS3 is more of the grown up console where you can use any of the devices you currently have that work for many things and not just the PS3. There's far more freedom with the PS3 than with the 360. PS Network vs Xbox Live is a prime example.

The PS3 feels more like the next generation media centre, whereas the 360 feels like a gaming console. Which I suppose is what it was meant to be. Thats my feelings on it, hate to break your heart Munky, but its not an act. Feel free to explain your side of things because I'm actually interested to hear what your have to say even if it is utter BS

Dude, you need to stop smoking whatever it is you're smoking. The 360 is every bit as "next gen" as the PS3. Easily influenced by Sony marketing much?

Just because the PS3's Cell is a bigger change from EE+GS doesn't mean it's better, and as far as games are concerned is exactly the truth. Also, as you've said it causes more of a hindrance than anything else for developers so why exactly is that a good thing, even if it is a bigger change.

Blu-ray again hasn't done anything spectacular yet for games. MGS4 is reportedly the only game I can think of just now which needs it, and I can see why with previous MGS games and the amount of cut scenes Hideo likes to use. Apart from being a cheap entry into HD movies blu-ray has done nothing this gen for gaming.

lmao, you seriously think that Bluetooth, although more accessible than the 360 wireless, is better? Oh man what are you on :rofl You need to read up on the tech a bit more before coming out with crap like that. The only reason afaik that consumers are locked into buying MS products is because they were doing 2 years exclusive before opening up their hardware to third party developers.

It's a shame the PSN has so much freedom yet nobody even takes advantage of it and relies on third party solutions in the end huh? The 360 is as much of a media centre as the PS3. It even has a Marketplace for movies and tv shows, something which Sony owns rights to for films and music and yet nothing to offer on PSN.

You've seriously been hit hard by the "next gen" marketing and Sony PR crap

^ It has nothing to do with the Sony PR team, they are joke believe me. I'm referring what's inside. As far as the 360 goes in terms of developers and its marketplace. Its had an extra year to develop, I'm sure Sony will get its act together come the end of 08. My belief strictly based on hardware alone is the 360 will hit a road block eventually and where it failed to grow, the PS3 will. Unfortunately it seems like its going to take a lot longer than I would like.

And before you think I've been Sony brainwashed, perhaps you should take a look at yourself, you look like you jumped in a little too deep.

Now how bout we, let it rest in peace mmmkay pumpkin

^^^I thought we've already decided that the 360 is as good internally (minus high capacity optical drive) as the PS3 despite being out a year earlier...

-Spenser

No, we established it is better internally. Damn, I hate sounding like a fanboy but from what I have seen its true.

That "extra year" excuse doesn't wash anymore. The PS3 has been out for a year now and the 360 had it's Marketplace established by now. Sony have way more resources for movies and music in comparison and don't have anything yet, or have even shown an interest in the market.

I'm not brainwahsed. If you're referring to my sig/avatar I merely like the logo. I wouldn't own all 3 consoles and both handhelds if I was a fanboy, and actually enjoy my PS3.
