PS3 Orange Box is a mess

Recommended Posts

In an interview earlier this year, Valve Software founder Gabe Newell referred to PlayStation 3 as "a waste of everybody's time." This attitude shows in the development structure of The Orange Box. While the PC and Xbox 360 versions were handled by Valve, the PS3 port was handed off to an internal team at EA. Originally scheduled to be released day and date with the PC and 360 versions, the PS3 Orange Box has been delayed until December. PS3 owners, forced to watch from the sidelines as their gaming kindred inundates them with tales of Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2 and Portal, continue to wait patiently for their chance to take a stroll through Valve's universe. After spending a significant amount of time with a near final version of the PS3 game, it's apparent that this version suffers from a number of technical flaws, which at best merely hinder game play and at worst make the experience downright unplayable. Framerate is a consistent issue throughout the Half-Life series of games included in The Orange Box. One moment you'll be cruising through the game at 30 frames per second and the next you'll be enjoying a slideshow of series protagonist Gordon Freeman cruising down the river. However, Portal suffers from no such technical hiccups and is on its way to being a pitch-perfect port of the spatial reasoning exercise. Due to a server connection issue, we were unable to get any time with Team Fortress 2.

With the clock ticking, EA has a limited amount of time to fix the glaring issues which plague this port of The Orange Box. Unfortunately, it seems that, once again, PlayStation 3 owners are doomed to suffer through another substandard version of a multiplatform game.

Not looking too good. EA really doesn't have much time to fix this. PS3 owners might want to skip this one.

PS3 owners should skip anything developed by EA anyways. Also, Newell is a moron. Everyone should remember how retarded this guy is in the development of Half-Life 2. Not to mention he let his network get hacked and have the source stolen. Yeah, I'm going to believe everything he says!

Well in Portal's case there's next to nothing pushing the engine graphically, so it's not too tough to run well.

A PS3 game with framerate issues? Well there's a shocker.

It's really nothing surprising. Just about every game released on all platforms has fps issues on the ps3 especially EA games. Madden anyone?

The biggest issue I think is how easy it is to develop/port pc -> xbox and vice versa. Developers are making their games with xna and then just outsourcing the ps3 port creating a sub standard port.

All the ps3 exclusive games don't seem too suffer.

Even the exclusives suffer (Resistance). The only reason they outsource is because they don't want to waste their time trying to trudge their way through the PS3 dev process.

Dev's aren't using XNA, they probably won't ever for AAA titles, at least not in the near future. That being said, the platform of PC and 360 are so much a like that it is very easy to port back and forth.

Im sorry, but i cannot let you say that about Gabe, without him, there would be no HL, HL2, CS, TF2, Portal, etc, etc, etc.

I couldn't live in a world without those games.

Some do, but your point isn't as strong when you use a launch title to make your point. LAIR is a better example.. but wasn't that game garbage anyways?

Didn't LAIR have framerate issues too?

IW managed a good version of COD4 for ps3

its just a good example of lazy devs IMO, there are a lot of pretty good ports about, i.e. fifa, r6v and graw 2 which have no real technical or framerate issues.

There's only ONE problem with 'The Orange Box' and that, my friends is the PS3.

It works fine on everything else.

PS3 = waste of time and money (just like Gabe said)

not really, plenty of good ports on ps3 that originated on 360, i.e. oblivion

just lazy devs

When Gabe said it was a waste of time he didnt mean it because of the difficulty. He was talking about effort vs outcome, the attachment rate on the ps3 is horrendus and with limited ps3s out in the wild they wont get the return on the investment. It is purely business.

Yep lazy developers! I might rent out both the PS3 and the 360 version to see which one I should buy

Just for the hell of it, Bush is more successful than you. Does that mean your he moron?

Success isn't everything, but as far as the topic goes, there are way to many half assed ports to the PS3. I just hope Unreal Tournament isn't one of them.

Actually it's an awesome game I played it myself.

COD4 is a good example of how it should be, IW openly stated that ps3 development was easy, so long as it got good coders behind it.

O I thought it was Lazy devs??

Though, yea it is probably a mixture of the two, PS3 isn't very popular in the press these days, and with the popularity of the 360, alot of multi format Developers are focusing on the easier more profitable machine. Which does make some sense.
