Does the PS3 upscale DVDs?

Recommended Posts

Just a quick question I had. I have seen conflicting information all over the net, and cannot seem to get a definitive answer if the PS3 currently upscales regular DVDs. If you can help me out that would be awesome, thanks!

It does :)

Too bad It's the worst DVD player i have ever used. ( Not meant as flamebait or any fanboy hit'n'run comment - I just think the DVD part is really lousy )

I don't know what you are trying to do with it, but it works just as well as any other DVD player I've used.

Very questionable since according to a comparison made by the boys over at DL.TV, the PS3 beats standalone HDMI DVD players in not only quality but also up converting performance. Also, I've watched over 30 movies on my PS3 and it's by far the best DVD player I've ever had. And I've gone through my fair share of DVD players over the years.

Oh and you got to make sure your PS3 has the latest firmware because Sony is always making improvements to the DVD/BluRay player's firmware.

Had some major issues with a bunch of DVD's some time ago.

They had a few usage-surface scratches, nothing major. All my DVD players weren't able to upscale, so i decided to try out my PS3. But because the disc wasn't in mint condition, the PS3 decided to pause every time it hit a "Scratch" - But not just to continue a few seconds ahead like EVERY other DVD player in existence, but skip an entire chapter ahead. ( Even though all my other players worked fine )

Also had a few other issues, with new DVD's not playing properly etc.

Now i have my DVD player from my Surround set which works perfectly and also upscales ( Which looks a helluva lot better ).

It's suppose to upscale over HDMI but I doubt that, for example when watching MOST movies whenever theres any movement on the screen I get blotchy fuzziness around the moving parts like the guys faces. I've got both reduction settings on 3, 720p, Normal as upscaling option, RGB enabled, and Super White turned off. My PSN trailers look amazing... haven't tried a BD yet.

I bought Transformers today and it looks great on it, but I still see minor fuzziness, it's great but I'm 99% sure my PS2 was FAR better over component cables.

Maybe its my $10 eBay HDMI cable? :/

My PS3 uses HDMI. I've got RGB range on full, super white turned on, upscaling to full. Reduction settings I leave to the movies/episodes playing. Sure, there is the occassional noise stuff (eg. in some Angel episodes), but this is negligeble. Overall, the PS3 does a great job of upscaling DVD material.

I had Transformers (DVD) in it a few weeks ago. My only grievance was the black bars, but given the way it was filmed, I guess that can't be avoided (w/o warping the movie). Regardless of this, looked awesome. I can only imagine how the HD-DVD version will look.

Yeah it does a great job. Probably a bit more then 2 years ago my parents payed like $189 for a upscaling HDMI DVD player and it definitely made a difference but soon as PS3 added upscaling (I can't remember exactly but I think it was in version update 1.6 or 1.8) I found it did a better job and now the DVD player is sitting in the basement collecting dust :p

ya it upscales, but remember every LCD/Plasma screen has an upscaler already in it (else you'd be watching a postage sized image) and if you have a decent TV it often does a good or better job anyway.

Having said that I leave upscaling on as it makes the PS3 menu's still appear in 1080p

I doubt any tv can do it better than a regular upscaling dvd player :/
