Got a job as a web designer...

Question

OK as the topic says I got a job as a web designer. My first task is to turn this into a full-blown eCommerce site. My problem is that I need to make this site work with an accounting software called Open Systems Accounting Software. Has anyone heard of this software or know what kind capabilities it has?

They have already decided on a host and I will be talking with them about the capabilities of their servers next week. My script language and database of choice are PHP and MySQL, however depending on this host and my previous experience with them, this isn't going to be easy. I'm likely going to have to use ASP or something.

when I say make it work i mean i want the web site to use our current accounting user database and inventory, and be able to modify it as necessary when users online sign up and make purchases.

and yes this company hired me to build and maintain their e-commerce website and database, but i'm unfamiliar with their existing accounting platform.

Google wasn't much help, and niether was anyone else around the office. all they told me is that their current software has eCommerce capabilites, while the OpenSystems official website says nothing on the subject, except that one of their other software packages is compatible with Microsoft SQL Server.

Does this program have any sort of Import/Expert capabilities at all? Most do in my experience.

Do you recognize any formats? (Comma seperated values, Tab seperated values, DB formats?)

I mean idealy you would like to see some sort of a way to use ODBC and connect to something like MySQL or some sort of server software but this software may not be that expandable.

In the very least you can develop a procedure that happens so often that generates a file that is full of all the transactions. Then you can exchange information with the accounting program.

Do the transactions have to be.. really really LIVE?

What sort of credit card transaction set up are you looking at? Does this software they have handle that, and is something they would like to stick with? Or can you persuade them to use something like Verisign as a middle ground.

I don't know dude, it's all sort of OT. Hope it gives you some ideas though.
