DrunknMunky Veteran Posted November 26, 2007 Veteran Share Posted November 26, 2007 I disagree. If something is physically uncomfortable to use, it is not my fault. It's just pure bad design. At least imo. You will never make a perfect controller that suits everybody cause hand sizes, shapes and length are all different. If you have ever taken Product Design class at school you'd know this, but I guess not. So please, I'm not bashing your precious console, it's not because I hate Sony, I just prefer other controllers :)
Huleboeren
*sigh* this is not about the console This is about the position of the analog sticks.. I must hurry on this drawing you obviously dont get it

rustix
dude why do you find the position of the joysticks in the DS so hard? is it that you've gotten used to the XBOX style more?
Huleboeren
I know we are talking about analog sticks. I don't like the position of them. You do. What's not to understand? I dont care about the position of them - the right analog stick could be where the XBYA buttons are and the left analog stick could be where the d-pad is.. They could switch it on the DS3 too and I still wouldnt care - shouldnt be any different. The only thing I dislike about the DS3 are the trigger buttons - they should be inverted like they are on the X360 controller - it can get slippery as it is now.. No, it's just physically uncomfortable for me to use. The same goes for the Wii Classic controller. It's horrible. The C stick on the NGC, the analog nub on the PSP and the d-pad on the 360 controller. All terrible design choices

DrunknMunky Veteran Posted November 26, 2007 Veteran Share Posted November 26, 2007 ^then why isnt the right analog stick uncomfortable for you to use? I don't have much problems with the right stick. It's where it should be, south west of where the buttons are. Switching the d-pad around with the left stick makes a huge difference though. The primary position for the most used controls should be at the top of the controller. Just like they designed the PS1 controller in the first place before DS. Now that games barely use the d-pad for movement, the left analog stick should takes it's position, and the buttons should remain where they are. Bhav
The primary position for the most used controls should be at the top of the controller. By that theory, the right analogue stick should be switched with the right-side face buttons lol.
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted November 26, 2007 Veteran Share Posted November 26, 2007 By that theory, the right analogue stick should be switched with the right-side face buttons lol. No because you use buttons far more than the right analog stick.

5Horizons
Wow, I guess I'm the only person who really doesn't have trouble with either controller. The only one that I have problems with is the Wii classic controller because once in a while I'll bang my thumbs into each other... :p
gigapixels Veteran Posted November 26, 2007 Veteran Share Posted November 26, 2007 I really agree with DM. The PS2/3 controller analog stick positioning is simply uncomfortable for me. My left hand starts to hurt after a while of playing on the PS2, yet I can spend hours on the 360 with no issues. I don't know why it's like that, but it is for me. andrew_f
I've taken a picture showing why I like the 360 controller - basically I can keep my thumbs almost flat all the time. If I put my thumbs flat on the stick when they're at the bottom I feel like I'm holding onto a tiny little bit, so I end up bending my thumbs and making them very sore after an hour or two.... probably just me though ;) But I much prefer the 360's layout having used both. DrunknMunky Veteran Posted November 27, 2007 Veteran Share Posted November 27, 2007 Depends what game it is - and in FPSes you dont use those buttons more There is plenty of FPS which use the buttons for reloading, changing/switching weapon and using melee attacks. And even more games which use them for basic functions like jumping or entering vehicles. Hell, not even GT5 or wtf it's called uses the buttons to accelerate and break. The most used function triggers are used for is firing weapons or in the 360's case driving games also.

I'll have to disagree with you on that ^^; ... this is how you hold the PS controller: not like this :p and btw ... how the hell did you take those pix while holding the controller with your both hands :D ... damn that was hard :D !! + the 360's controller is nice ... but I think nothing is as good as the DualShock controller ^^; ... SecretAgentMan
The Xbox thumbsticks are definitely an improvement to the DS but it is still an average controller at best. The DS is in dire need of an upgrade.

gigapixels Veteran Posted November 27, 2007 Veteran Share Posted November 27, 2007 sLm4ever is right - don't hate a controller because you don't know how to hold it ;) It really just depends on one's own hand size... My hands are larger than most and my fingers are very long, and the DualShock just doesn't feel comfortable, no matter what way I try to position it in my hands. It's all down to personal preference and hand size, really.

So you just strafe (with the left analog stick) everywhere? How many times do you enter a vehicle or reload compared to how much you look around when playing a FPS? andrew_f
Like I said - personally I can't hold it atall like how you say you should - it feels so weird. Even when I played the PS2 from launch until I got the 360 I felt it was uncomfortable. And I don't hate it - I am more than happy to use one, but given a choice of what to use, it'd have to be the Xbox Controller.
Emn1ty
I think the biggest issue I had with the dual shock is it always seemed too small for my hands after I hit 14 or 15. The controller is just so small depth wise. Not only that, but my thumbs tend to smack into each other since the josyticks are right next to each other. The last thing I hate is how uncomfortable the controller is. Its got sharp edges all over the place, everything on it is hard plastic, so nothing about the controller is comfortable. It took me a week to master the DS, when it only took me a day to forget it for my S controller.
