US PlayStation 3 sales climb 300 per cent

Matt Martin 08:33 (BST) 27/11/2007

Following the introduction of 40GB and 80GB SKUs

Sony Computer Entertainment America has revealed that sales of PlayStation 3 hardware have leapt by 298 per cent since November 2.

The climb is attributed to the availability of both 40GB and 80GB units at US retail.

Figures for the Thanksgiving period ? dubbed Black Friday ? were up 245 per cent when compared to the previous year.

According to SCEA figures, for the week ended November 24, sales of the PSP handheld in the region jumped 136 per cent compared to the previous week, and PS2 sales were also up 287 per cent.

Ahead of the busy Christmas season, Sony is also enjoying positive sales in other key regions.

Last week, the PlayStation 3 outsold the Nintendo Wii in Japan, and yesterday it was announced that the recently released PSP Slim & Lite has sold over one million units in the region.

All the smart people waited and now the price point is comparable to that of an XBOX. :p I expect the sales to keep rising now that Christmas is here. But I guess you can say this about all hot products since it is the holiday season.

Interesting. My brother's girlfriend works at a Gamestop and worked on Black Friday. She said the majority interest was in the Wii (which they sold out of wicked fast). She said that beyond that, they sold 4 Xbox 360's and 1 PS3. Didn't seem like either were what people were lookin for.

Your brother's girlfriend works at one GameStop in the whole country.

I'd think sales of both Xbox360 and PS3 will increase, as many parents will end up buying *something* since the Wii is in such higher demand and so much harder to find.

This "300%" increase is for a Christmas-morning consolation prize. Not just that, but a crippled one that doesn't even play the same games as the original 60/20 Gig versions did.

Why pay $600 for a Wii on eBay when you can go to Wal-Mart and pick up a PS3 for $399? Let's just hope little Johnny doesn't notice that none of his PS2 games play on it.

And you live in London where you have more chance of finding the Arc Of The Covenant than the Wii in a shop.

So people do more Christmas shopping in November than October.

Wow, thats amazing Sony, thanks.

And sales are up over last year when it was just recently released and harder to actually find one? And now you can because the hype has cooled?

Even more amazing.

Here in Canada the 360 and the PS3 are the same price now, both $399 it's definitely going to be interesting to see how this all pans out in the next few months. :D

I know atleast 5-6 new PS3 owners personally, and can see the list growing very FAST!

I wasn't trying to take away from the news. I'm sure PS3 sales did increase that much. 360 sales also probably showed an increase. The Wii is still commanding over all of them.

The article is a bit of FUD, as obviously sales would've increased over last year at this time - the PS3 was just released at this time last year and it cost an arm and a leg. It's also the Xmas season. Everything is going to see an increase in sales. It's still good news, I'm just pointing out that it's not solely the PS3 that's shining right now in the shopping season (which would explain why the article gives percent and not sales numbers - it would be extremely impressive if the 360 or Wii increased 300% as they've already been outselling the PS3 by 200-300%+ week by week all year in the US).

Bingo. I just doubt that they can publish ANY information that's not completely ridiculous. Nobody is asking the question that if they want to reach 6 more million sold units by Q1 2008 this is HARDLY enough to shift the numbers even tiny bit.

Excerpts with numbers like this don't mean anything, because if you piece all the info released over the last 6 months you would realize that they are actually not doing good at all.

Absolutely the same deal here in Phx. Gamestops have sold absolutly laughable number of "cheap" PS3s. Even with Spiderman bundled, my closest Gamestop has sold like 3 since the introduction of $399 one and others are not different. I know quite a bit of the managers at Gamestop, as I play COD4 with them too.

But HD-DVD players and X360 hd-dvd addons were ripped off the shelves as soon as they came in, right?
