American Ninja
In an in-depth new interview with Epic VP Mark Rein, the exec has been discussing Unreal Tournament 3 for PlayStation 3, praising the possibilities for upcoming Home integration and Sony's 'trojan horse' strategy of including Blu-ray in the PS3.Firstly, Rein talked about Unreal Tournanent 3's planned integration with Sony's Home online world space. UT3 is now confirmed to launch for PlayStation 3 in December, with Home due out in early 2008, but the VP indicated that Epic already has concrete plans for use of the service: "We're planning that you'll be able to get a party together in Home and then file into the game from an Unreal space. Home's pretty cool, so we're planning to do that. That'll make it easy for... what I like about that is that you'll be able to form without us having to build a party system. It won't be as detailed as a real party system, but the idea is that we could all meet up in a room and go together in the game. I think it's really smart that eventually if everybody does that, each company doesn't have to develop its own way to all meet up somewhere and all go into a game. I think that's a very smart way to do it, and I kind of wish Xbox 360 would do that, and I'm hoping that they will at some point. In other words, all these games have these different systems for getting together and then traveling into the games together or playing as teams or whatever. I expect that to be a dashboard functionality at some point in the future for the Xbox 360, and I think Sony's already thinking that way with Home." Further on in the interview, Rein discussed the PlayStation 3's possible momentum going into the holiday season, post-price cut, noting "They've got a lot going for them right now. It's a great Blu-ray player. They're going to push that really hard." Clarifying his comments further, he explained of this angle: "I think if you have a large install base [of any game-playing device], you have an ability to sell software, and if you have a large enough install base, the publishers will, if they feel they have a big title, they will put the money behind marketing it. I think there's nothing wrong with the Trojan Horse strategy of "let's get this device in the living room, and it can play music and DVDs and high-definition movies." The Xbox 360 does that too. So I don't think there's anything wrong with having a good Trojan Horse strategy, because there's nothing better for us as game developers than having a huge install base. Publishers will say, "Hey, there's ten or however many million of those. Let's spend a little bit extra to buy our disc and stick it in." I think once it's there, there's the temptation to play games on it, regardless of what your original meaning was. If people buy it as a Blu-ray player, they... will play games. When the big ads come out in August for a new Madden game, they'll pick up Madden. They've got the equipment, so why not? They've made the investment." The full interview with Rein is now available on Gamasutra, including much more detail on the PS3/PC mod functionality for Unreal Tournament 3, Unreal Engine 3's relationship with Japanese developers, and a host of other subjects. +Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted November 28, 2007 Subscriber² Share Posted November 28, 2007 Good read. BS: So in terms of being able to make mods and maps and stuff on the PC and then play them on the PS3, is that still happening?MR: Absolutely, yeah. BS: How did you get that to go through? It seems somewhat technically difficult. MR: No, I mean, we have Unreal Editor on the PC version of the game, and the content is compatible between the two. That's the thing that people don't realize. When you take a level in Unreal Tournament 3, you build it on PC. The exact same levels you're running between the PC and the PS3. The things that are different between the games aren't really the levels. They're the speed that certain vehicles move, the firing rate of weapons, the turning radius for the player camera. Things like that are tweaked specifically between PC and console. But the levels and the content itself is 100 percent compatible. It's really no big deal. You make something on the PC, and say, "Oh, now I can go test it on my PlayStation 3," right then and there. What we do to finalize it, make sure it makes the most efficient use of memory, and runs the fastest, is we bake it down to the PS3 version, but that's just like saving a file in Word in a different format. If you save it on a PlayStation 3 format, you can stick it on the Internet, and someone can download it, put it on a memory card, and import it into their PlayStation 3 version of the game. That works really well. ^ I'm really happy about that. Good to know the PS3 mods don't need to be dumbed down, and hopefully we can experience all the good mods that hit the PC. Xerxes
No kidding! This just ****es me off to know that they are working hard on the ps3 version while they have been completely ignoring the pc version. So how is the PC version? any issues it has I should be aware of? I'm planning on picking it up after work today (as it launched here today, well hopefully it might of been delayed again...). To the PC version getting ignored, I think you will find the PS3 version is where the big money will be made, so Epic want it tobe as good as possible, PC gamers tend to get left behind as a result. This is mainly due to the shift from PC to console as the primary gaming platform that has happened in recent years I beleive.
PiracyX
They really need to sort out the PC version first because it's a mess right now.
PricklyPoo
So how is the PC version? any issues it has I should be aware of? To the PC version getting ignored, I think you will find the PS3 version is where the big money will be made, so Epic want it tobe as good as possible, PC gamers tend to get left behind as a result. This is mainly due to the shift from PC to console as the primary gaming platform that has happened in recent years I beleive. Well I am slightly exagerating as the game is still very playable, but there are some annoyences that still remain which you can find on the UT3 forums if you 'd like. Try downloading the demo and see how you like it, the full version is exactly like the demo except with more maps and the mutators/vehicles etc... And the whole feel of the game is just very slow and you can tell they made it for consoles and ported it to pc. They just slowed down the game speed from ut2004 and got rid of the dodge jump, changed the weapons to the ut99 weapons etc...I think you will like it but if you were fond of ut2004 you probably will not. Also if you get the game I can point you towards some .ini changes to make the game look a little sharper and get rid of weapon bob...etc. You might find that the mouse movement is a little shakey, uneven and that is one of the many bugs aswell, you can turn off mouse acceleration through the .ini files but that doesn't really help. If you weren't a hardcore fan of the psat UT's you probably won't even notice any bugs or annoyances in ut3. And some of the weapon damages are uneven, so online you will find a lot of people running around core spamming and only using ythe minigun since it is so overpowered.
