PS3 used to crack passwords, dubbed Crackstation

Let's add another function onto the list of things the PS3 can do -- this one, however, isn't something we'd really like advertised. It's almost scary. Security-assessment.com senior security consultant Nick Breese has been using a PS3 to hack passwords and such. Apparently using a PS3 drastically increases the processing capability to do so, using the most basic of hacking tools -- brute force.

By brute force we mean it just tries every combination of numbers and letters incredibly fast. The old upper limit of vector computing using common ciphers and hash functions was around 10-15 million cycles per second, but with the PS3, this has moved to around 1.4 billion cycles per second. That's really about all we're going to dive into. If you want to read about the complex workings of the "Crackstation" project, feel free, but don't go trying this stuff at home!

Lovely picture :p

I wonder how they do this - if they can run unofficial apps and link multiple ps3 machines into one.

Why cant we? they bought the dev kit?

Yeah thats what I wonder? :iiam:

ps. Huleboeren is it you that's been voting every topic of mine 1-star? Tut, tut... heh, just joking.

First nuclear war, then curing cancer, now cracking passwords..

What ever next :p

Well it was said a while back that the potential processing power of a PS3 is about 1% that the human brain can... So I'd a cluster of 100+ PS3s and create artificial intelligence :p

Isnt ps3-linux really really crippled? or isnt access to the RSX needed to crack passwords? :p

You wouldn't need graphics processing to crack passwords. Linux has access to all of Cell but Linux it self only uses the PPC core (witch can take 2 threads thus when you check system usage it shows two CPUs). To use the SPUs on Cell under linux the program has be be written to use SPUs, my bet is it's done in linux using SPUs

at MIT there is actually a course to link PS3 together to do some interesting stuff. I can see it now...link a whole bunch of PS3 together and you get the first skynet!

I guess this makes sense, the PS3 sucks for gaming so find something else to do with it. Seriously, if people had enough time "Not playing" games on their Xbox 360 they'd probably write some optimized code to crack passwords all the same.

This is junk food for PS3 fan boys and nothing more.

LOL... dude get out from under your rock...

There are many good PS3 exclusives and some really good ones coming 2008. There are lots of good Multi-platform games, lots of the older ones were ported poorly but it seems most of them now are excellent! I have not had much time to play games recently but I still fit in as much game time as I can and I know a lot of people that play there PS3s all the time!

This was done on PS3 and not 360 because PS3 has access to install linux when with 360 it has to be done with many hacks.

Where the heck is PS3's flagship... will it be Gran Turismo?

Nintendo Just came out with Mario...

Xbox just got Halo 3... What's PS3 going to come out with?
