Iain
First of all, all I've done so far is play some demos (no games yet) and watched a DVD (no blu rays either!)... So, what settings do I need to... erm... set? I've seen some people mention video settings etc. I'm using HDMI cable. Right, when playing DVDs, it has a black bar at the top and bottom. Not sure why. How do I resolve this? Also, what can I do with the PS3? I've only done the above, so what other cool stuff can I do! I saw a post somewhere about stuff you can do with it, but can't find it now! When browsing the internet, the quality of text is horrible. Any way to resolve this? When watching a video on youtube, it's REALLY slow. Can't understand the reason for this with the hardware of the PS3! Or is this just normal?! I've heard about making it a 'media box' etc, but no idea how to do this.. (I suppose this is covered by the above question about what can it do) Anything else you would like to add, would be great! Bear in mind, the only things I know it can do is: Play PS3 games, Play blu rays, Play DVDs, and download demos. No idea of settings or other stuff it can do! morficus
ok... the first thing you need to so you start playing with your settings...the best way to figure out what something does it by tinkering with it. the only thing I would recomend doing to having the PS3 auto-detect the best resolution and audio source. Just go into video settings and walk through t little wizard. in regards to the browser being slow... that's just the way it is. and the text being fuzzy... make sure you are doing at least 720p. 1080i might give you fuzzy text just 'cause its interlaced (i know this holds true for 480i vs 480p with the Wii), but I don't browse much with the PS3... so I can't really say now down to the "must haves" Games: - Warhawlk: awesome online multi-player only game. - COD4: if you like first-person shooters, you'll love this game - GH3: it's a relly good party game. I haven't been able to get the on-line feature to work.... but still good fun - Resistence, fall of man: was the 1st game I got for the PS3 and I still play it every now and then. not the best single player, but multi-player is nice - Assassins Creed: I don't think I even need to explain this one... - Folkore: really nice action/RPG. I would recomend downloaidng the demo first - RAchet and Clank: haven't played it as yet... but the demo was loads of fun Programs: - TVersity: takes care of all of your media-streaming needs (pictures, videos, music) - TVersity - TVersity (did I mention this yet?) Demos: - HD concept racing: it's simply breath taking... - Any thing that calls your attention basically. Custom stuff: - Don't forget you can download wallpapers from the PSN or copy them over from your PC - Also, check out this thread to find a few custom themes that people have made Thigs to look in to: - Eye of Judgment: motion-sensing webcam for the PS3 - Metal Gear Solid 4: if you have not heard of this.... you must have live under a rock - PS Home: same goes for this. I don't think there is a PS3 owener that does not know that this is - playTV: video here that should keep you busy for a good while ;-) - morficus
Iain
Now THAT'S what I call a reply! Appreciated. Is there anything else it can do? I'm looking into that TVersity thing right now. Looks pretty good! I'll have a play with that at some point, though I'm losing HDD space fast! (40gb model - gonna HAVE to upgrade to like 320gb!) As for games. On the 'must buy' list, I've got: GTA4 MGS4 (even though I've not played it since MSG1!) GT5 Uncharted So, shows the kinda games I like. I've got the Uncharted demo at the moment, and it's brilliant! (Though I'm not brilliant at it) I'm downloading R&C before, having never played it on the PS2. Not keen on ProStreet, and hate GT HD. No damage, wooden gameplay, naff graphics... no point going on! LOL I like FPS games since playing Halo 3 on the xbox! lol.. Want something similar to that. COD doesn't appeal too much, as it's Army stuff, which I hate. Gonna download 'Folklore' at some point (the demo) - see what it's like! I'll pick up Resistance at some point, but waiting for that to go under ?20. Although I see the PSstore as a good idea, it's a bit pants really... Nothing on there!!!! What will PlayTV do?
PL_ Veteran Posted December 1, 2007 Veteran Share Posted December 1, 2007 What will PlayTV do? PlayTV turns your PS3 into a Freeview-powered Digital Video recorder. Play, pause, record and rewind live TV straight to the hard disk, watch stuff on the move with your PSP, and scroll through programme guides to find what's on and when. A good deal IMO if you don't already have something like this :)

Brandon Live Veteran Posted December 1, 2007 Veteran Share Posted December 1, 2007 Right, when playing DVDs, it has a black bar at the top and bottom. Not sure why. How do I resolve this? That's normal behavior for widescreen DVDs...
Huleboeren
That's normal behavior for widescreen DVDs... Well not all - some movies will fill your whole 16:9 widescreen. Some wont and will add black bars making the picture wider.. It is up to directors(?) how they want their movie shot Wikipedia Aspect Ratio Look at the picture with the circles and different colored squares

Huleboeren
even on a widescreen tv?my ps2 always filled the screen Have you tried with the DVDs that dont fill the whole screen on your PS3, on your PS2?
Brandon Live Veteran Posted December 2, 2007 Veteran Share Posted December 2, 2007 Your PS2 was probably stretching them. Most *movies* are 1.85:1, not 16:9. So the bars are smaller on a widescreen TV, but they are still there. You want them, because if they aren't there then you are stretching the image (or zooming it and cutting off the sides). TV shows these days are usually recorded at 16:9, so they typically take up the full screen if you are set up properly.
EnzoFX
^^^ true, it depends on the movie itself. Download the GT5 Demo if you haven't already =P Hopefully when divx support comes, TVersity would no longer be needed.
dragon2611
Try pressing the widescreen button on your tv remote a few times... Most Tv's can cycle though aspect ratios. Although I don't have a HDTV so I don't know if it does anything with a HDMI source.
