patconn87
Hey all, I feel kinda dumb asking this question, but is there a way to share specific folders with Personal File Sharing in OS X 10.4.11? I know you can explicitly define which folders to share in Windows, but I'm wondering if I can do something similar in OS X. My issue (briefly) is this: I administer a network of Macs in a Media Production Lab at a local high school. I enabled Personal File Sharing on one of the client machines, but the list of available share points that I get (when authenticating as a student) is limited to the home folders for the local users. The editors for the school yearbook need to be able to access files on another part of the hard drive, and I don't want to have to use our server as intermediary storage, or have them authenticate as an admin each time they need to access these files. Can anyone tell me how I can define specific share points so I can share out this folder? Thanks in advance for any insight.
gnuman
You should be able to control click and choose Sharing and choose Share this folder.
patconn87
I just tried that, and I don't see a sharing option (even when logged in as admin)... I've even gone as far as to open up Workgroup Manager on the local machine, and I can't find anything... Aren't there some commands in Terminal or something that will allow me to share out this folder?
furby
I think you're a bit confused gnuman, that's how you share a folder in windows :o Back to mac though, had nightmares trying to figure this out on tiger it couldn't be more unintuitive. There is some app out there that claims to do it(I forget the name) but that was awful too. Try just adding the folder to the Public Folder or alias (right click--make alias) of a folder and drag the alias to the public folder. You could always create a guest account on the mac where the file is stored. Give access to that folder, in Sharing and permissions on the folders get info. I gave up trying in tiger so not sure if that stuff will work, but worth a try
david.rothera
The easiest solution is to download a Preference Pane called Sharepoints which allows you to set specific folders to share, it is a lot easier in Leopard, it is built into the sharing pane.
