Ubisoft stumped over PS3 Assassin's Creed problems

By Frank Caron | Published: December 05, 2007 - 10:08AM CT

Though the recent patch for the PlayStation 3 version of Assassin's Creed helped alleviate freezing issues for some, other users are still reporting issues with the game. Unfortunately, it appears that even Ubisoft doesn't know what's going on.

Popular Mechanics managed to stumble upon the problem during its Thanksgiving-weekend play with the title. Altair will sometimes freeze in mid-air, and though he is essentially immobile and the game must be reset, the camera is still functional; the game isn't completely frozen. Looking to investigate the strange bug, PM contacted Ubsioft for answers:

We spoke with Michael Beadle, Ubisoft?s senior public-relations manager, about the freezing problems. He says Ubisoft is investigating the matter and is not exactly sure what?s causing the glitches. The company noted a drop in complaints once PS3 gamers noticed that turning off the automated login feature on the PlayStation Network, or PSN, reduced the number of crashes. We tried this, but the game still crashed. Ubisoft is working on a patch for the problems using feedback from gamers and blogs, Beadle says.

While there's never been a better time to own a PlayStation 3, there are still plenty of problems with some of the multiplatform software. It's a little disheartening to hear that sometimes even the game devs don't know what's going on with their PS3 games.

look at the Sony PS3 Cell processor documentation...good luck in tracking down this bug. Parallel processor debugging is going to be really fun especially if it is a game....

It's the Matrix's computer! It runs Windows!

Lol, jk. I honestly hope they find the problem. It's pushing me away from AC, honestly.

P.S. Windows is not that bad, it's just that Windows and crappy computers aren't a good partnership.

I finally have gotten around to playing this game this past weekend, and perhaps it is because it asked me for the Update right when I put the disk in, but I have not even seen what could remotely be considered an issue yet, so perhaps that is they key, applying the update with a clean slate? I know that is a crappy option, especially since this game is so damn in depth, but seriously I have not seen one issue and I just finished Mission 02.

Also I have to just say really quick, I really had low expectations for this game after reading all of the reviews, etc., but I personally think the game is very damn good. I am even (at least right now) enjoying eavesdropping and pick-pocketing and all of the little side quests that so many people complained about. Plus finding all of the eagle spots or whatever they are called is a ton of fun. Again, I have only gotten through Mission 02, and that indeed took a few hours with doing all of the small side things, but I am really liking the game so far.

LOL.. so one or two great games are out there and it's never been a better time to own a Playstation3? LOL.. this is really a joke.. I mean what is it that these people are smoking when they make statemetns like this.

Of course, and it's something myself and many other logical people have been saying. PS3 is horrible for devs, they simply can't justify additional costs of developing software for a platform that is completely unpopular so they either halfass the port to PS3 or simply outsource the dev to a 3rd party.

What do you think after Ubisoft loses so much money on this support for PS3 version of the game, will they release more games for PS3 or less?

Same situtation with other devs too. No difference.
