I had fun troubleshooting IE

Recommended Posts

Customer: My Internet doesn't work.

Me: What kind of trouble are you having?

C: Well I open up Internet Explorer and it says the Internet is down.

M: Is this on the screen now?

C: No...

M: Can you bring that up for me?

C: OK... Here: "The webpage is unavailable because you are offline..."

M: And what does it say to do?

C: "What you can try. Connect to the Internet." I did that. I'm connected now. When I pick up my phone, I can hear that it's connected.

M: What else does it say?

C: "Make sure you are not working offline"

M: Yes. Follow those instructions there.

C: OK. "Click Tools and make sure that Work Offline is not checked."

M: Right.

C: OK... Tools... I don't have a "Work Offline"

M: ???

<5 minutes of discussion/debate/confusion>

I just wish that Microsoft would have put that option under both Tools menus because it's hard to explain to someone who doesn't know what I'm talking about that they're clicking on the wrong "Tools."

I liked it better when the Menu bar was turned off by default. Still, though, a lot of people couldn't find their favorites since it's not labeled anymore.

You mean "Maybe Microsoft should be specific as to which Tools since there are two?"

Or maybe Microsoft should put the option under Tools no matter which Tools menu you click on?

I just think that Microsoft underestimates the stupidity of people in general. I'm sure many many others are going to have that same issue in the future now that the Menu bar is enabled by default when IE7 is installed.
