Tretton: We underestimated PS3 'education process'

Platform holder?s US CEO admits firm believed gamers would take console more quicklyb>

CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America Jack Tretton has admitted that many consumers were still left in the dark about PS3?s capabilities following the console?s launch.

In an interview with GameDaily, to celebrate his first full year as CEO, Tretton said:

?We are on our fourth platform introduction, and this business is never easy. There is always formidable competition. There is always education that needs to go on with consumers.

?But the honest answer is that while we knew price would be a challenge for the PS3, we underestimated the education process and the fact that there is a lot of information for consumers to absorb about PS3 given its advanced technology. This will be an ongoing challenge, but we think we've made great strides over the past year.?

Elsewhere in the interview, Tretton said PS3?s online PlayStation Network doesn?t need improvement to compete with Xbox Live, and promised that PlayStation Home would be ?like nothinSource:??.

The people don't care what "advanced technology" is in the system (not that there is any). They care about games and the quality of them. Give us some more games with the quality Ratchet & Clank and Uncharted and then we'll see where the "education process" is at.

Seems the education process isn't the only thing he has underestimated. Tut tut Mr Tretton (N)

See you in another year with an article "We underestimated XBL Marketplace" ;)

Bad launch, sketchy marketing, but plenty of time to get things back on track (Y)

Sony have underestimated how competitive the gaming market is when you have genuinely good rivals - They have previously enjoyed success of sailing through the market, but that's never going to be the case again.

100% fully agree with both of you.

The PSN DOES need improving to compete with Live, who is he kidding?

Obviously as Audio said, PSN is in its earlier stages than Live, but to say that it doesnt need improving at all is a joke.

Haha. I cannot believe he's got the balls to put the blame on consumers (with a spin that makes it sounds like he's blaming his own company). They seem to continue to overestimate their own education in actually giving the consumers what they care to have.

I hate to say it but people actually do care what the thing can do. 75% of the time when someone is looking at buying one they ask all sorts of questions, much of the time comparing it and the XBox 360, and have almost nothing to do with the games. I wouldn't believe it myself if I didn't sell them. And yes, Blu Ray is a massive selling point for most of them.

IMO - Live is not what needs to be conquered. Not even. We could go with complete third party servers and online services, yet still be successful. There are other issues that could have been ironed out (titles anybody?), but it's not as bad as some people on Neowin make it out to be.

God, the insults never end coming from Sony.. if you can't read what he's saying he says "we underestimated how stupid people will be in getting this magnificent machine called PS3" and fails to even mention that the reason PS3 is ass so far is because they did nothing but offer movies for more then a year. Not to mention the BALLS to say that there's absolutely nothing wrong with PSN.. They just keep on going with idiotic statements... God I hope that whole division shuts down.. freakin' asswipes.

I like you because you're a Sony fan and realize that the system has yet to go through some hardships to fix the problems, and they could very well do that.

I'm much of the same way, except I haven't actually bought the system yet, I'm holding off until they DO fix those things. In which I think they will, in given time.

I wish more people posted like you and DM instead of throwing around "fanboy" all the time and constantly flaming/trolling every post ever. I'm all for a good debate on things, but some people just ruin the fun of conversation.

 And you should be listened to with posts like that?

He's got a point, though, no matter how riddled his post is with unnecessary language (my other post explains why I think so).
