Poolie07
Hi there, I'm after a PS3 for Christmas and I live in England were the 60GB version is completely unavailable and from what I can gather, is not coming back. So left is the 40GB, which is the only version available in British shops at the moment, or the 80GB version which I would have to import. I don't know which version I'm better off buying, I don't know the price differences between the two and I'm not to sure the different features in each version. Could I please have some opinions from other people to help me decide. Thanks in Advance!
Corris Veteran Posted December 9, 2007 Veteran Share Posted December 9, 2007 To start, two simple questions. Do you want to play PS2 games on it? Will you be downloading or storing a lot fo files on the PS3 itself?
Poolie07
Well I know backwards compatibility is not available on both versions, and as for downloading/storing alot of files on the PS3, I dont know. Is it possible to add backwards compatibility?

Is it possible to add backwards compatibility? No, backwards compatibility is available on the 80 GB through software but not at all on the 40 GB version. You can also install a larger hard drive yourself if you want to. You can read about the differences here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3
Corris Veteran Posted December 9, 2007 Veteran Share Posted December 9, 2007 Ah, I asked because if you imported an 80gb from the US, they do have backward compatibility with some PS2 games. And it could very well be possible in the future via software emulation, but I wouldn't expect too much. Well, since your mind is already set on not having to worry about backwards compatibility, I would just get a 40gb here in Britain, while it does cost more here than it would just buying it if you were in another country like the US. Along with shipping fees, and piece of mind knowing if something happened to it here, you wouldn't have to worry about problems for the warranties and such like. And you can always buy a bigger hardrive if you wanted one. That's just my opinion though.
sundayx Veteran Posted December 9, 2007 Veteran Share Posted December 9, 2007 Just get the 40 for a lower price and don't bother about the backward compatibility, you won't be focusing on playing old games on the new console anyways. Why bother, its cheaper too.
KoL Veteran Posted December 9, 2007 Veteran Share Posted December 9, 2007 yeah if you are not going to play PS2 games get the 40GB version. I'm loving mine. :p
Poolie07
40GB it is then, thanks people!
EnzoFX
i'd recommend you upgrade the hard drive, =P any laptop hard drive works, 2.5" sata, the price difference betwen the 40gb and the 80gb can buy you a much bigger hard drive, 160gb-200gb i think. Zab
Well if u ever wanted to play PS2 games just keep your old one around if the need arises, -the harddrive you can upgrade, -your only get 2 usb ports as appose to 4 usb in the 80 gb, but you can just go to a electronics store and get a multi port expansion so you could use one usb and get 4 or more. -you are missing the media ports that come with the 80 GB version (all those camera memory stick card ports) but hey you can just load stuff onto your ps3 via Ethernet 40 GB: - 40 GB HDD (expandable) - 2 USB Ports - Blu-ray Player - Internet capability 80 GB: - 80 GB HDD (expandable) - 4 USB Ports - Blu-ray Player - Internet capability - Media Ports - Backwards compatibility Chip - Wi-Fi capability
Cormier6083
Also, a larger hard drive would be essential for all of those juicy DivX movies coming soon... now you have to find them.
sn00pie
I'd go for the 40GB then upgrade to a bigger HDD. You will use alot of space, I only have 20 left on my 60.
Iain
Within 2 days I had my 40gb down to 5gb free! (Only coz I was downloading everything in the ps store!) :D
Julius Caro
I've seen 120GB 2.5'' hard drives for 60-70 euro. So the hard drive is really not an issue, is it? Plus, you can always use an external hard drive for things that aren't games. I have a 60GB and I have demos, trailers and game data and I still have around 20 GB free, I've had it since march. WelshBluebird
80 GB:- Wi-Fi capability Both versions have wifi. The only one that does not is the 20GB version that was sold at launch in japan and the US, but soon discontinued (and never sold in Europe). one321
During those Kmart 20% off coupons and from knowing a friend that gets Sears and Kmart discounts, I got an 80GB for $360. I would probably have purchased a 40GB if I couldn't have gotten that deal, because I absolutely don't need BC. However, I am glad I got the larger hard drive even though I know it's easy to swap even bigger. Also, I'm glad I got the media card readers since I plan on having this a long time and it might as well have as much functionality as possible. On a sidenote, I highly recommend the Bluetooth Remote. It's much better than the controller for watching movies.
sn00pie
I find the controller fine for watching movies. The only gripe I had with the PS2 controller for movies was the fact it wasn't wireless, the Sixaxis is wireless so it does me fine. :D

The only gripe I had with the PS2 controller for movies was the fact it wasn't wireless, the Sixaxis is wireless so it does me fine. :D I also find the sixaxis just fine for movie playing. It sucked in the ps2 though. The BD remote is also nice (I have it too). The only let down is that I never know where the buttons that do what I want to do are... (I turn the lights off when I'm watching movies and all). So I end up using the triangle menu or the discs pop up menu.

fobi
grats on getting the 60gb version. it has the most value hardware-wise. no one mentioned the region compatibility for dvds, unless i'm totally missing something very obvious. if you import from US you'll only be able to watch Region 1 dvds. what about bluray discs? i should think that they will be restricted by region too.
