Killzone 2 dev admits screenshots 'touched up'

Recommended Posts

I can agree for that. I admit lots of PS3 screen shots looks like the color is dull, changing the HDMI color option from Limited to Full and turning Super-white on makes a world of difference for me. But most screenshots from developers and reviewers are taken with the default PS3 settings because well some TVs don't work all those options.

I know changing my Bravia's picture mode from "standard" to "vivid" makes a pretty big difference in graphics (at least in my eyes anyways).

I don't mind as long as they don't show screenshots with insane, almost unachievable, amounts of anti-aliasing applied.

Ooh! Criminal Corporation.

I have no idea what Sony ever did to you Boz, but you must hate them with a passion, like they're the anti-Christ of the industry to you. I have had a Sony TV once, and it worked perfectly. Never had any problems.

Well I hate everything that's trying to screw me over. Don't you? A company that does illegal things in order to gain market advantage and make me pay more for something I don't need to pay is what makes me hate anyone, not just Sony.

Btw, they are criminal corporation in terms of they do illegal things and then try to cover it up.

and it's hardly the first case too, but this is the one they got caught really bad.

Then don't buy their stuff, simple as that. I own a 360 and I really could care less about the PS3 at the moment but when you repeat the same things over and over in every single PS3/Blu-Ray/Sony thread that pops up, it just gets tiring.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here, as I work in the industry and have had done image retouching for press releases.

It's common practice to touch up screens, and I'll tell you why: You're releasing images of a game that isn't even finished yet.

Your not even into alpha/beta yet but the publisher wants a press release and you don't have a say in the matter. Either you take some shots or they'll get some idiot on their end to do it...using an old build with the wrong level...and MSPaint. A level might be due for another lighting pass or anti-aliasing isn't working (the last game I worked on didn't have AA until the last week of development!) so you do what you can to make it look as good as possible.

However there is a difference between touch-ups (to reflect the final product) and misleading alterations. I'm not saying these Killzone shots go that far though. But it's usually easy to tell the difference between an actual in-game shot, something set up and scripted, and something overdone like a front box art paint-over.

A much needed insight. Thanks.

Anyway, there is really no need to argue here about touch ups. Just review the gameplay videos and see if the game looks like the screenshots or not (I'm not saying they do or do not). Everything in motion looks much better than still shots.
