XP -> Vista -> Ubuntu

Recommended Posts

So, i decided to wipe my XP installation and give Vista one last try... big mistake, after getting it installed, activated and my programs working it decided to not let me connect to MS Update (uh oh!) to cut a long story short, i gave up on Microsoft completely wiped the HDD and installed Ubuntu, so here i am on a fresh new Ubuntu only machine.

Liking it so far, Synaptic and apt-get are great and everything is working (even Compiz) although i disabled it bc it's just annoying.

:)

Yea, I came cold turkey from Vista to Ubuntu as well and haven't looked back.

I sort of have to agree about compiz. The wobbly windows bit just looks a bit daft to me but some of the other effects are cool.

Anyways, nice move :D

:D... now just to sort out these ugly firefox radio buttons.

Hah, funny. I think that was the first thing I wanted so desperately to fix when I first installed Ubuntu as well

I used Ubuntu for about a month (from XP); I didn't mind it. It was a great learning experience but I switched back to XP after a month mostly for its convenience (compatibility, and gaming mostly).

I would have kept Windows purely for gaming, although the only game i play on the PC is CS:S and i could run it through wine although i'm not too bothered.

Congrats on taking the plunge. I dual booted RedHat/WinME (I had to use ME, as it fixed an issue I had with my scanner every time I plugged my digital camera in) up to the point where XP came out. I liked XP, but there was no support for my scanner in it - OEM dropped support for drivers at that point to sell their new ones.

At that point I switched to 100% Linux, and haven't looked back since. Linux really grows on you when you find out how easy it is to maintain (initial config can be challenging, but once set up, it just chugs along like a champ! ).

I would start here:

I don't use wireless in Linux, so I'm sorry I can't step you through what you need.

That was actually where I did start. I have the driver .. no problem there ... now how do I install it?? This is my first time with Linux so Im sure that 99% of my problem is ignorance. Do I have to manually install it via command line or what??

With regard to Compiz, try switching off the wobbly windows and enabling some of the window-switching effects. One in particular that I find useful is a feature that zooms out and shows all your workspaces in a row. You can scroll left and right and it zooms back in on whatever one you've chosen.

I've got my window effects set to "Glide 2" on open/close, and horizontal-fold on minimize so they "curl" a little and fly to the bottom taskbar.

The lesson I learned is that Compiz can really help productivity but you have to set it that way yourself. Less is truly more and once you get it configured it works wonders.

I finally got it straightened out!! Its hard to believe how much faster and more stable it is. I know it'll take a bit of time to become familiar with Terminal and all, but overall ... its a keeper!!

Glad you are liking Linux so far! Like I mentioned earlier, the biggest challenges are the initial configuration and learning. After that, it really is a dream! :D
