Xerxes
Hi All, I seem to be having a slight problem with my new PS3 (40Gb model) when I was running in on S-video everything worked as it should (just didn't look that good) but since I got a HDMI to DVI connector DVDs lock the console up! everytime I place a DVD-Video in the console the monitor turns off (no signal) and I have to hard reset the console to get it back and it is a bit annoying, I've tried changing some of the DVD settings but to no avail. Anyone know what might be wrong? a setting I might of missed or something else?
Coldgunner
sounds like the monitor does not support the resolution and refresh rate of dvd's, have you got dvd upscaling on?
Xerxes
sounds like the monitor does not support the resolution and refresh rate of dvd's, have you got dvd upscaling on? I've tried it with the upscaling on and off, same result. Seems odd to me it doesn't work, it worked fine on S-Video (same monitor) and the 360 has no trouble over VGA and obviously the computer has no trouble either (DVI). It's a 24" Dell Widescreen (model number escapes me right now) if that helps?
Coldgunner
can you try a different monitor? you can then work out if its the monitor or ps3

shakey
i doubt its the monitor if it was working before. sounds like an issue with the port on the ps3 and producing the image.
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted December 18, 2007 Subscriber² Share Posted December 18, 2007 The 2407WFP is compatible with the PS3 - I can confirm that 100%. You may have the 2405WFP though? - I dunno if that is fully compatible... Does a monitor not need to be HDCP compatible to play movies (DVD/Blu Ray) over HDMI? I'm also guessing your 360 isn't an HDMI enabled one?

I get the feeling it could be that too...it works fine with everything else, games work (haven't got any Blu-Ray movies to test but I'd imagine they'd work fine too) can watch recorded movies (streamed from my PC) etc...so I doubt my HDMI port is defective, it seems to be directly related to playing DVD movies. Does a monitor not need to be HDCP compatible to play movies (DVD/Blu Ray) over HDMI? It could be the newer one, only got it this year (came with my new machine I got a few months back) and yes for Blu-Ray (and HD-DVD) you need the monitor to be HDCP compatible, which my monitor is. I'm also guessing your 360 isn't an HDMI enabled one? No it's the older Premium version, I run it over VGA. The PS3 is connected via DVI. What I really don't understand is why the DVD will work when the PS3 is connected via S-Video but not HDMI? what does it do differently? is it because I'm using a HDMI to DVI cable? I'm completely baffled! EDIT: Opps, probally should of added this to the previous post! sorry.

Xerxes
Longshot, but it MIGHT be your cable...Have you any others you can try? No, I only have the one cable and it is brand new. Although I got a cheap one, I guess that *could* be the problem right there. Still seems odd that everything but the DVD works though. Trying a BD movie would also be good. I'll get one and try it out :p (I only have HD-DVDs at the moment) Also is this a problem with 1 dvd or all of them? I have only tried one so far and I guess it could it be just that DVD, but it works in everything else I've tried it on though, so I know it isn't defective (I also watched that DVD on the PS3 the other night over S-Video too) When I get home tonight, I'll try some more DVDs just in case it was a dodgy DVD and I'll try a Blu-Ray movie as well and see what happens there. EDIT: There is a person on the official PS Forums with the exact same problem (even similar monitor), the solution was reset the PS3 to it's default settings. However, I also found out the PS3 seems to have known problems with HDMI to DVI cords (in causing problems with DVD/PS2 games) so there is also a chance my problem may never be fixed. Coldgunner
like you say, sound like the HDCP handshake somehow. even dvd upscaling requires it.
Xerxes
Problem seems to be solved now, not sure why or how. All I did was try out a Blu-Ray movie and it works great, then popped in a DVD and it worked! tried another one and it worked too! so strange  oh well, all is well in PS3land again :) (for now) EDIT: It does an awesome job upscaling the DVDs, I tried turning the upscaling on and off and the difference was huge, wow :) Edited December 19, 2007 by Xerxes
