Firefox 3 RTM

Recommended Posts

Alright, I'm getting sick of the daily updates with Firefox 2, so does anybody have an estamation of Firefox 3's release, or is that just unknown?

Then don't do the dailies? The released versions are plenty stable enough.

They will do them with 3.0 as well.

I think he's referring to the deluge of point releases for Firefox 2, e.g. 2.0.0.10 getting quickly replaced by 2.0.0.11.

I was exaggerating slightly, but what I am saying is that Firefox 2, for whatever reason, has had 11 updates total. Essentially, they should have done what they did with Firefox 1, made Firefox 2.5.

So you would rather them not fix the bugs and exploits? I don't get it.

FF1 had a TON of updates as well. It went from 1.0 to 1.0.8 and THEN 1.5 to 1.5.12. And that doesn't include all the pre-1.0 releases, some of which were very stable.

Do you 'get sick' of the Windows Updates too? Do you not update your antivirus because it makes you 'sick'?

This isn't anything new with 2.0, or with Firefox. Any properly maintained widespread program should have updates to fix bugs and other issues.

You are right. I am getting a little ridiculous, but any smart development team (meaning really smart, the Firefox team is just smart) would get the product right the first time. But I can understand anti-virus updates.

1.5 was 1.5 and not 2.0 because they didn't think that the changes warranted that big change in the version number.. and didn't 1.5 have its last version at 1.5.0.12?

Anyway, it is better that they fix the problems and don't just keep them unfixed for long periods of time or just claim they dont exist like someone else does :p The problem is better fixed than forgotten..

In software development there is never a product that is released that is done right the first time, it takes many updates for any products, even open source ones to get there.

Again, you all are right.

Agreed, and before you say anything on that, Mozilla actually do sell physical CD's with Firefox on it. :) Not too many probably, but that's irrelevant. ;)

As for the original question, my guess would be a few more, maybe 2-3 or so, months to go.

There has been no Firefox 2.5 because the point releases have been minor fixes, mostly security-related. Mozilla isn't releasing point releases as major releases.

Firefox 3's release is currently targetted at the first half of 2008. Although I don't understand why you think that this version will require less updates than 2.0.0.x.
