StevoJD
Hey guys, I just recently got a PS3 for Christmas, and I have a question. How come games install game data? It's like 500MB-2GB in size. I'm just wondering what specifically this does. Is it to improve load times? Just wondering. Really loving the PS3 so far. kak
What games? I never noticed it.
StevoJD
A lot of games. Ratchet and Clank, UT3, Resistance, Orange Box, Assassin's Creed. Before you play the game for the first time it always "installing necessary game files, please wait 30-60 seconds."
Xerxes
Yes, it is to improve loading times as the Blu-Ray drive is too slow to rely on alone. The only annoying part about this is you need to be careful about what games you get as you can run out of space quickly, still at least the PS3's HDD is easy enough to upgrade. I'll probally be upgrading mine in the future, as it seems quite a few of the games I'd like to get need to install a minimum of 2-5Gb of data and that will eat up my 40Gb HDD pretty quick. sn00pie
I own a 60GB PS3 and I have less than 20GB left, and I constantly delete demos I don't want to play! :|

Assassins creed installed 1.3gb of data and all the others games I've played (Orange Box, Drakes Journey, etc.) do not surpass 1gb.
sn00pie
Most games do not surpass 1GB, the biggest I've seen is NFS:Pro Street which installs 700mb, Ratchet & Clank installs something like 70mb off the top of my head.
StevoJD
UT3 installs about 1.5GB :p It's alright I guess.
Digitalx
it's to allow increased loading times and stream loading capability how much a developer takes advantage of it is up to them really but usually won't ever be much if at all over 4GB
kak
UT3 installs about 1.5GB :p It's alright I guess. I knew UT3 installed a good chunk. I was waiting for you to mention it :)
Xerxes
Really? Assassins creed installed 1.3gb of data and all the others games I've played (Orange Box, Drakes Journey, etc.) do not surpass 1gb. Well GT5 and GT5P will eat a touch over 5Gb each, which is alot. I've read UT3 takes around 4Gb, although from previous posts that seems tobe wrong (thankfully) and I've been contenplating Oblivion (which takes about 5Gb) but probally won't since I do have it on 360 (but can't play it as the 360 is dead) and PC (but doesn't play well unfortunatly)

simmorya
Rachet & Clank : 417Mb Heavenly Sword 1.1 : 2068Mb <-- BIG Orange Box : 452Mb Resistance : 863Mb Motorstorm 3.1 : 390Mb Warhawk 1.2 : 122Mb Im upgrading my 40GB PS3 to a 250GB HDD next week. I reckon GTA will take up alot of space as well. That game was bad for loading on any system. Hopefully to compensate PS3 owners for no content packs the game will have superior load times. Hopefully. Edited December 30, 2007 by simmorya
