I finally caved

You can't really be too critical about a free service.

Actually, sure you can. It's not technically a "free" service, you paid for the console it runs on. And it still doesn't even match what X-Box Live Silver (free) has to offer, with complete network-wide friends, messaging, achievements and more.

Just a note, I don't own a 360, a PS3 or a Wii. I'm a PC Gamer, through and through. Just had to interject my own worthless opinion

How does PS3s online version of gaming compare to XBOX Live?

it doesn't!

it's almost like comparing apples and oranges.. one is free but a piece of crap, and one is awesome in every way and miles apart from the free 'alternative' but some people have issues with paying around $4 a month for it.

good luck with your purchase though! i may be getting a ps3 sometime for movies, but i highly doubt it will ever get any game lovin', that's what a 360's for!

Congrats on the ps3, mine just started getting some use again after the long unchallenged reign of 360 games...

I'm surprised so many people enjoy warhawk, I thought it was crap, seemed just like another battlefield incarnation.

On the other hand, I was pleasantly surprised by Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank. Heavenly sword was the last game I'd had for it and before that it was Resistance.

I'm not going to make a new thread lol but I just purchased my 40GB PS3 the other night with Ratchet and Clank (my all time favorite series on the PS2) and an HDMI cable. Though I made the mistake of taking it over to my friends house right away who does have an HDTV but no HDMI port, so sadly my first experience was not great visualy, please include component cables Sony, you make such a big deal of HD LOL. :) Once I got it home and hooked it up via HDMI 1080p wow, much better. :)

I think one of the biggest reasons is I wanted an easilly upgradable Blu-Ray player and I know some games were coming that would not see the light of day on the 360. Even though both the 360's I owned RROD first day I got them (launch and Elite) I still really enjoy my 360 and I wanted my current generation to be complete, the WiiStation360 as I call it. :) I do love how it is pretty quiet compared to the 360, I was like, is it on?

Definately some thing I like over the 360 already. Backup is wonderful, makes it so easy to upgrade hard drives without a pain except setting the system settings again, plus just being able to copy my game saves to any USB stick to backup is just super. Previous consoles I have like Dreamcast and Gamecube, as well as the Wii supported displaying what game is in from launch, 360 had to add that, and the PS3 just is absolutely great how it displays demos like realtime video clips, information and such. I also love how it shows what Blu-Ray movie is inserted, too bad the 360 can't do that with the HD-DVD player for HD-DVD's...reading this MS? :) Fantastic presentation indeed! Has built in wireless like the Wii (I release the 20GB model did not) and I could care less about the BC or media card readers (I have a functional PS2 Slim). I also like the Bluetooth stuff like being able to sync my phone's headset or a mouse and KB if I wanted to. Though BT for the remote kind of puts me off since I got a Logitech Harmony and cannot use it. :(

I will eventually get a new HDD that is 7200RPM and larger in capacity and dedicate the current 40GB to Linux to play around with. I love how I can pick up basically any SATA 2.5" drive and pop it in and go. :)

Far as the PSN goes, I already knew to expect something that is not as refined as XBL. Sony still appears to be figuring out what to do with it and hopefully something somewhat soon will come out of it. I do love the integration of XBL on the 360, especially the 360 guide. As someone said, it is a WIP for now.

In reguards to the PS Store, the themes and wallpaper under Featured Items, is that going to always have all the themes and wallaper or just recent or featured ones? I hope all because there is no category for them else where, I suppose I am not too fond of the PC like interface using the controller.

I caved as well.

I bought an 80GB PS3 on Saturday to go with my new LCD TV. So I'm now a 3 console owner (well, technically 4 if you count both Xbox 360s), though I really only bought the PS3 because I wanted a Blu-Ray player (already have HD-DVD via the Xbox).

I'll be blogging my impressions of it sometime this week. So far it's proven to have excellent playback quality (and 1080p/24 support is superb with my 120hz LCD), but I haven't actually played any games on it yet. It came with Motor Storm and I picked up Ratchet and Clank, so I'll be giving those a shot soon. I didn't really buy it to play games, though. I have an Xbox and a Wii for that.

Other than great BluRay playback, it's been kind of ****ing me off. No IR sensor? My friend ordered a custom built one online for $50, going to see how that works out for him. But between that and the HDMI + optical cables, this thing is ending up over $600 without even buying any extra controllers or gaming accessories.

The PS3's UI is all over the place. The core XMB is okay and seems to be a slightly less intuitive clone of the Media Center UI. But overall using the console is a very inconsistent experience, quite the opposite of the 360. In fact, comparing the two reminds me of a few years ago when I compared an iPod to a Creative Nomad Jukebox. The Xbox is like the iPod: sleek, consistent, intuitive, but focuses on core functionality. The PS3 is like the Nomad Jukebox - bulky, geekier, unintuitive, and loaded with tons of not-well-explained advanced options (some of which have strange defaults).

Where everything in the 360 has the same 10-foot oriented, always-available UI... the PS3 feels more like a computer with a launcher and then a bunch of applications, all designed by different people with different UI methaphors. And in many places (like the Store) it feels like a desktop computer interface, shoehorned into a console with a game controller and not a mouse+keyboard. Not to mention buggy. Half the time I press the Start button or click the "start / enter" key on the on-screen keyboard, it would insert a space instead of confirming the entry. I'd have to delete the space and try again on almost every field.

I don't mean for that to sound all bad, though. Where the PS3 lacks integration and seamlessness, it (at least tries) to make up for it in the breadth of its capaibilities and features (Printer support???).

I just wish Sony hadn't tried to cripple and/or money-grab by limiting it to only work with their own stupid bluetooth remote control, and not been so cheap about what they included in the box. Not even component video cables. That's outrageous.

I got the 40gb PS3, Spiderman 3 on Blu Ray, an HDMI cable, the Remote Control, and an Optical Audio cable all for $440. It just made sense to buy it all online, and all of it is new also. I would have easily spent over $500 if i went to a place like Best Buy and bought it all.

I was including tax and shipping where appropriate when I said over $600. And I only ever considered the 80GB, since the 40GB lacks BC and such (plus I think I'd rather have MotorStorm than that god awful SM3).

Haha yeah. I got it online to not pay tax, and everything was free shipping. I considered the 80gb, but decided to go with the 40 because from what I understand they run much cooler and quieter.

I caved in awhile back, so congrats. I have absolutely no regrets doing so. None. In fact, in the past few months, I am happy I did it. So enjoy.

Yeah thanks. I've been following your experience somewhat with all of the consoles and it helped me in the decision to get the PS3.

For those wondering I will have all 3 consoles now.

I do wish I had my Wii now because of SM:G and RE:UC, but a friend of mine who I am going to let borrow Bioshock and Gears Of War as he just got a 360 for Xmas is going to let me borrow his Wii and those games sometime in January/February, so I at least get to play those games. So that is cool.

Overall though, although it is not as polished as the 360 overall, I am very impressed with the PS3 and its capabilities. It does indeed offer a few more things than the 360, albeit it some of them may be useless in the grand scheme of things, but they are there nonetheless. Just something as small as being able to create Virtual Memory Cards, I think that is a neat little feature.

And I do strongly recommend Uncharted. To me it is just a classic well done video game. Nothing ground breaking, just incredibly well done.

Why would you care about BC? You said you got it strictly for Blu-Ray playback?

IMO, RE:UC suck ass. RE:4 is much better.

SM:G is brilliant.

I got an email saying that part of my order shipped...only the HDMI cables.

For some reason it says the PS3 and the remote aren't going to even ship out until January 7. Blah...

Either I get a XBOX360 or a PS3. The Wii is out of the question because I am looking for HD graphics. The 360's unreliability is a factor and I may tend to get a PS3. I had two XBOX360's in the past and they both crapped out on me. Since then, I have not got a 360 and sold the replacement I got from Microsoft. I definitely need a console soon to fill the void of gaming but I am not sure yet.

My friend has both the PS3 and XBOX360 and the XBOX360 is all he plays. I may wait till MGS4 and Dual Shock3 controllers are released before getting the PS3, nonetheless.

I gotta admit, the PS3 console is well designed, looks appealing and the slot-loading Blu-ray drive is so cool

Brandon, I am all over the lack of an IR sensor owning a Logitech Harmony remote. I just opted not to pay Sony for yet another accessory and I'll just use the PS3 controller for playback, to heck with them! I don't have an audio system just yet, so thankfully the optical cables were not needed but HDMI I had to get (as most new 360 owners do unless they get the elite) but I say again, if you want to push a console being HD include component cables at least!

Oh and don't get me started about XMB, I wasn't fond of it on the PSP's I had toyed with, let a lone a console itself. Wiki states that it is Emmy Award Winning, IF that is true, wow got some real idiots out there giving awards away...oh wait I knew that. One major quirk with the UI I have had so far is trying to find pictures on a USB device! I connect it, and go in and it says no photos...even though I just put a JPEG image on there...wtf. So I was thinking, then I opened up options and told it show everything...low and behold there it was finally, copied it over and it shows just fine in the HDD's photo folder. That's just nuts. The other quirk is with the show all, it only shows for that folder, NOT the entire device, so you have to go in and do it for every folder, ugh. Also, where is the option to browse the entire drive's contents that would be user acccessible. I want somewhere I can look at all that stuff in one place, even the Wii lets you do it via memory management for the built in, SD or GCN cards! Also, why is it when you first get the system it defaults to a phone keyboard and not the standard, that almost made me return it when I saw it if there was no other way to enter in using the onscreen keyboard.

And the next part, goes back to the cables etc, Sony just loves accessories as was seen with the PS2. That had the imfamous multitap when more than one console before it had four controller ports built in. Well, the PS3 thankfully is wireless, but..no components cables, needs a BT remote if you want a remote for BT playback, memory card adapters for your PS2 and PS games cost extra (at least they have it, wish the 360 did for Xbox games...). Should have been some of the stuff included in the box, ie the cables and memory card adapters should be the box, EVERY PS3 is at least BC compatible with PSOne in some respects. And the remote, well the console should have an IR port for those who have universal remotes and paid a bit for them. They can toss in games, but not cables? Cables probably cost only a little more than a Blu-ray disc itself if they cost more to make.

Also, what is up with the 3 foot charging cable? Seriously, have to set the PS3 up with it and if you have a huge TV that isn' fun, luckilly I have a USB extender cable, makes me wonder why Sony didn't market those for $10 or more for the PS3 just for extra cash because people would buy them.

Also I was playing with the parental controls as they had a default level set out of the box lower than the highest, why are there 11 levels when the manual only shows what 6 of them are?Am I missing something? LOL.

Definately been fun with Ratchet and Clank so far, but the system software does need more refinement and the component cables need to ship with the system.

Mortog, when you goto your USB Flash Drive and it says empty. Hit triangle and press "Display All". ;)

I think its good that they don't ship with component cables, whats the point because if you want to upscale your old DVD movies (which almost everyone who watches movies on there PS3 will want to do) you need to buy a HDMI cable. Therefore rendering the component cable useless, and in the end they would be spending more money for no reason. Including a HDMI cable would be to expensive for Sony, especially when there trying to save every buck they can.

I have two controllers so when one is charging, I use the other one.

A lot of people are picking up a PS3 these days, so that's great news for Sony. One interesting thing though is that they seem to be picking it up as a 2nd console. That's a lot different than last gen when the PS2 was the main console and the XBOX was the 2nd one.

Congrats on your purchase. I'm thinking of picking up one myself in the next few months.

You do realize an HDMI cable doesn't cost any more to make than any other cables do. You can buy HDMI cables for under $10. Same with optical (toslink) cables, they used to be close to $100 and you can buy them for like $7-$10 now. So if you can buy them that cheap imagine how little they cost to produce.

Yeah I don't understand why sony doesn't include an HDMI cable in there. You can get'em from Monoprice for like 5 bucks and are the same quality as the $100 Monster's, without the pretty packaging o_O
