+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted January 6, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted January 6, 2008 Pretty crazy huh? Now the question I have is howmany of those were bought for gaming, Blu-ray or both? The public is being told that the PS3 is the best Blu-ray player you can buy. I think it?s important to note who?s using it for movies and who?s using it for games. Here?s the full release from Sony: Sony Computer Entertainment America Announces PlayStation® Hardware Sales Exceeding 3.9 Million During Holiday Sales Window 1.2 Million Consumers Join PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3) Family since Black Friday FOSTER CITY, Calif., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ ? Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced PlayStation® hardware retail sales reached more than 3.9 million units in North America during the critical holiday sales window (Friday, November 23, 2007 to December 31, 2007). This accounts for SCEA?s three systems currently in the market PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3), PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) and PlayStation®2 (PS2). PS3 retail sales reached 1.2 million hardware units during this holiday timeframe. ?The PlayStation brand ended the year in a very strong position and clearly indicates more positive momentum going into 2008. We are particularly pleased to have sold through 1.2 million units of PS3 during the holiday selling season,? said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. ?The strong PS3 sales also further establish Blu-ray?s dominant position as the high-definition medium of choice for games and movies. Consumers are clearly responding to the expanding multimedia capabilities and a great line-up of over 200 games.? Sales of PSP reached 1.4 million units during this same timeframe. The success of the recently introduced Daxter PSP® Entertainment Pack and Star Wars Battlefront® PSP Entertainment Pack have continued to swell the PSP install base. Upcoming platform defining software such as God of War®: Chains of Olympus and Final Fantasy: Crisis Core will further increase PSP momentum in 2008. PS2 sales exceeded 1.3 million units during its eighth holiday season. The industry?s most successful platform is poised for another great year in 2008 with the continued success of the critically-acclaimed Buzz and SingStar® franchises. PiracyX
No doubt about it, Blu-ray is one of the most biggest selling points of the console. Everyone i know who brought a PS3 keeps on going on about "it has Blu-ray" and thats all that matter right?? Still i want one for both means. Well not necessarily. If Blu Ray would happen to fail, which it's not, the games are made on Blu Ray also...that could cause a problem.
cashman Veteran Posted January 7, 2008 Veteran Share Posted January 7, 2008 I'm pretty sure the 360 and the Wii sold a lot more than that. It seems like quite a small number really when you think worldwide...

theyarecomingforyou
That's going to make a huge difference to the format war. The HD-DVD group just announced sales of 1 million for the year, accounting for 49.3% of hi-def players. If you factor in the PS3 (which isn't counted for Blu-Ray) you see that Blu-Ray has at least a 2:1 lead - however, those PS3 sales are just for the holiday period so the actual figure will be much higher. I just hope the format war is ended soon and we can have one format to choose from. If it's Blu-Ray that wins it that's fine by me.

KC
I bought my 80 gig PS3 for games, not movies. However I would say now the machine gets used for about half and half through out the day. I've bought 3 blu-ray disks since I bought it in December (after Christmas). I think in the end the PS3 will probably end up being a good investment for our family. KoL Veteran Posted January 7, 2008 Veteran Share Posted January 7, 2008 very nice :) @ KC: I got my 60GB mainly for games and yeah I was thinking about it as a Blu-Ray player too but it was mainly for games. After my first Blu-Ray movie I started to watch and get more Blu-Rays and I even decided to get another one (40GB) for my room. I'm really happy with it. Cloud Constructors
Interesting KoL, you have two PS3s. I am really considering buying a PS3 this week! Probably the 80GB version. Either that or I buy the XBOX 360 Elite but the PS3's Blu-ray interests me more, so does MGS4.
spenser.d
Very nice, this means Sony is back and can catch up. :) For one, I don't think Sony was ever gone to begin with, so to speak, so they can't much come back :p Second, it only means they can catch up if they outsold the competition in the same time period (unlikely, but I obviously can't say for sure). If the competition's sales increased also, then it just means everything is as it was. It is good news, though - I'm not denying them that ;) -Spenser
EnzoFX
well maybe this would help: http://www.dailytech.com/Microsoft+Moves+4...rticle10225.htm if its just north america, then it seems it dead slightly better, right?
SnowRanger13
PS3 is selling well and should be selling even better in 2008. It wont overtake Xbox360 or Wii in 2008 but it will close the gap to some percent. In 2009 I think PS3 could get 2nd place but they need to do a lot of things right. The_Fox
Well I?m glad blue ray won, better technology I can?t wait to get my ps3 just the look at the space developers have to work with on the disc now to produce excellent games with rich graphics and content. Free online play and a huge platform to work :D. :D
