CES Day 1 & 2: LittleBigConvention - Release Date/Videos/DLC

Recommended Posts

Greetings from Las Vegas! Today is the first full day of the Consumer Electronics Show - and if you?ve never attended (this is my first), let me just tell you - this thing is huge. CES reminds me of a Tech-themed Louvre; you can walk for an hour non-stop and never see the same thing twice.

Even with so much to see and try out, I knew exactly where I wanted to go straightaway - the LittleBigPlanet demo in the hugetastic Sony pavilion. In the video below, Kyle Shubel walks us through some new ?Create? functions of the game. You may wanna pay special attention to an off-hand remark he makes towards the end of the video.

Watching Kyle build a tree from a few simple building blocks was really inspiring, and I know that once you gamers get your hands on the full game, we?re going to see things even the designers never envisioned. Oh, and this made-for-internet video really doesn?t come close to doing the game?s visuals true justice, keep that in mind.

I?ll be checking in during the week, finding out all I can for you (thanks again for those of you who contributed to the wish list). Stay tuned to our Flickr site for updated photos, and our Crackle page where we?re sharing video with all of Sony Electronics. Here we?ll be posting videos from the various presentations and other goings on from Sony Central.

Last year, Sony introduced Little Big Planet for PlayStation 3, aimed squarely at the casual crowd that seems to be clamoring for all things Wii and games like Scene It for Xbox 360. At last, it seemed like there was hope for the floundering PlayStation 3 after all.

Since then we've watched the game evolve slowly, and with ne're a firm release date in the pipelines ? and at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2008 in Las Vegas last night, Sony showed off some new features in the game and a brief look at how users will create their own levels from scratch.

New additions include new emotions for the game's main characters, little stuffed sackcloth creatures called Sackboys. Click up on the controller's D-pad to make the creature go from straight-faced to smiling, to grinning to deliriously happy, tongue hanging out for emphasis. Click down on the D-pad to turn him into a scowling sourpuss. Sackboy's newfound emotions will also affect his other gestures. He'll shoot the peace sign, Nixon-style, if he's in a good mood and bare his fists if he's in a bad mood.

This small attention to detail makes this game both visually appealing and just plain charming. Game producer Kyle Shubel says he's never seen a team "so obsessed" with bringing a world to life using intricate textures and "things that remind them of their childhood."

Sackboys can now move from front to back in the environment, and no longer just from side to side. Easter eggs with new items can be placed around the game ? pick them up to add a leaf shape or new texture, etc. to build your sackboys' inventory and ultimately enjoy more flexibility when creating or adding something to different levels.

Little Big Planet's currency ? formerly called Sponge ? is now called Fluff, which in the level we played last night looked like tiny pastel colored Marshmallows.

"We got rid of Sponge because it could only look like one thing ... a sponge," says Shubel, indicating that the Fluff would change its appearance based on the level.

To create a game from scratch, the user opens an empty room and then, armed with a vast menu of shapes, textures and pre-rendered images, turn it into an interactive piece of art. Facing the blank canvas can be a bit daunting, but we could fill up the space using pre-rendered environments (in this case we used a desert background with big rocks and tall brown grass).

Shubel then demonstrated how to make a simple tree by replicating and resizing a Y-shape, addling leaves and then copying the entire tree several times to create a wooded area. While watching Shubel expertly put all of these pieces together, building your own levels might be daunting for the super casual user. On the other hand, it's hard to knock a game that empowers the gamer to do something more than vegetate on the sofa, mashing buttons on a controller while issuing commands over a voiShubel also mentioned that people's creativity might lead them to create R-rated content in the game, which will call for the game makers to integrate a rating system for user-created levels (something that's in the works) and some kind of parental control to keep young ones from accessing materials meant for mature eyes only. for mature eyes only.

Little Big Planet still lack a release date, though we expect it to hit PlayStation 3 before the end of 2008.

Sounds like they wont be too hard CES '08: LittleBigPlanet UpdateLiSony shows off a bit more of one of the PS3's most anticipated titles for 2008.pated titles for 2008.

LAS VEGAS--It should go without saying that LittleBigPlanet is one of the most anticipated titles for the PS3 in 2008. This title has charmed just about anyone who's seen its unique brand of platforming, customization, and user-generated content. Sony and UK-based developed Media Molecule held a special presentation in a theater in Sony's CES booth to give those in attendance a deeper look at the promising title.

The demo kicked off with teaser trailer that showcased Sony's varied product lineup across its various consumer electronics product lines, with a lengthy nod to the PlayStation 3 and LittleBigPlanet, as well as a brief look at the PSP. Once the trailer was over, producer Kyle Shubel took the stage and invited Pete Smith and Leo Cubbin from SCEE to show off the game. The presentation was broken up into chunks centering on three game features: play, create, and share.

The play section of demo showcased a brand new level in the game, with an Indian theme, that included some new gameplay elements, most notably hazards, death, and continue points for multiplayer. During the demo, the crew noted that the developer-created levels will be playable by one to four players locally or online. The new level kicked off at a start point that was essentially a gate that wouldn't open until all four players were in front of it. T

make it through their levels with unique items. So anyone who sees you rocking a swank outfit or sporting some neat item in your levels can find out where you got it and try to go earn themselves one which will drive up that particular level's popularity.

All told it should go without saying that LittleBigPlanet is well worth keeping an eye on this year. The imaginative game seems poised to be one of the titles that offers a compelling showcase for the truly unique content possible with the latest batch of consoles. We wish Sony and Media Molecule had actually gotten the once-promised demo of the game out--and from the sound of it the closest we'll see to it is some kind of beta hitting in the next few months--but we're pleased by how the game is shaping up. There appears to be a good selection of content slated to be in the game, and the promise of all the user-generated goodies that are coming really has us excited to see how this all plays out. Look for more on LittleBigPlanet in the months to come. The game is slated to ship this fall, exclusively for the PlayStation 3.

Media Molecule team members are currently on stage at CES, showing off the "play, create, share" title LittleBigPlanet to conventioneers and business types. The team just showed off a new pre-built level for the first time, one that introduces player death and respawn points to the DIY platformer. One of the new materials, under the "terribles" group, is a steaming hot magma rock, one that kills on contact. Sackboys who've been killed off can return later, courtesy of respawn portals. This adds a bit more of a competitive element to the game, as those still alive can secure unclaimed Fluff. At the end of the level, the LittleBigPlanet player with the most Fluff wins, naturally. Score results are shown on a TV with cute retro styling.

Hints of the first bits of downloadable content came in the form of new backgrounds, some of which have already debuted at CES. In addition to already shown desert and zen garden levels, the eastern Indian background featuring a pre-built Vishnu-like multi-armed god.

Sony and Media Molecule staffers also showed off another pre-built level with a heavy southwestern theme, a sombrero sporting Mexican mechanism that shuffled back and forth between structures. Players had to cooperate to pull the toy, which doubled as a platform necessary to progress, in order to complete the level.

The team also broke out briefly to show off the updated emote system further, with angry, sad, nervous, happy faces and postures, each with three degrees of intensity.

The game is looking very solid, but there wasn't too much on display that hadn't been seen at other events. The "share" portion of the game wasn't available, with Media Molecule recycling the same mock-up video shown previously.

Sony didn't follow up with any other titles, choosing to focus solely on LittleBigPlanet.

Yeah right!

just kidding haha yeah, this looks pretty cool, and i really hate "different" games. :D

It's definitely going to sell millions.

User created content, mixed with the art direction, mixed with "endless" possibilities, mixed with good ol 2D platforming fun.... it's just a bag of awesome... uhhh mixtureness?

Plus the fact that a "single player" game is confirmed with enemies/bosses and levels - So it's not just a massive sandbox experience.

It's the type of game almost everyone will want to try, and a very high % will want to own after seeing it at their mates/playing a demo/watching a video.

This game is one of the reasons why I bought a playstation 3 this weekend (besides blu-ray). I hope its easy to create levels and games.

Watch the presentations released from the gaming shows last year. It uses a simple system to place/remove/edit objects into the game world.

Looks really easy to get the hang of!

Of course some of the more elaborate levels/object designs will require more time/effort.

9 Minute LittleBigPlanet Demonstration

lbp-3-copy.jpg

Here we have a new walk-through of LittleBigPlanet, showing the lovable emotions of a dino “Sackboy”, how you can give your creations away as prizes, and the game’s community aspect.

LittleBigPlanet is charming. The ability to create your own physics based levels and share them among the Playstation community is an exciting prospect.

In this following Gamespot video you can see the world map where you can share your levels with the Playstation Community. The ease of finding other’s levels and the ability to narrow the world map so you can share your creations with particular locations is pretty sweet.

Furthermore, Media Molecule explain how you can give away your creations as a prize. The more intricate the object, the harder you’ll want to make your level so only the select few can win it. This takes creating, sharing and playing to another level.

More LittleBigPlanet footage is to come tomorrow, hopefully showing off the “Play” feature of the game.

Little Big Planet shows emotion

Sackboy is a sack of emotions at CES. Check out the video.

Video/Source: http://n4g.com/ps3/News-97836.aspx

2x New videos.

*edit: The 2nd video on emotion is actually covered in the 9 minute presentation anyway - although they ARE different examples showing the same stuff.

The 9 minute presentation is incredible (Y) This game will be utterly awesome, maybe rival Zelda/SMG on metacritic? We'll see....

Just going to be stunning, it's great that it's a new IP. I also think it will bring something new to gaming not the same old, we see so much of the time now.
