+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted January 11, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted January 11, 2008 The Xbox 360 may have Halo 3, but good luck if you ever get a tumor. Sony?s PlayStation 3, on the other hand, may now offer another helping hand to the medical world, according to researchers at the Mayo Clinic.A chip originally created for the PS3 may be the key to greatly improving the way doctors monitor a tumor?s growth via computed tomography (CT) scans. The number of images produced from just a single CT scan can overwhelm current computers. But, as anyone who?s played MotorStorm knows, the PS3?s Cell Broadband Engine processes data like a Hummer guzzles gas. Researchers announced on Monday that the Cell chip might speed up CT scan results tenfold, providing earlier opportunities for diagnosis, treatment and preventative measures. "We are at a point with standards in technology and new genomic based analytic techniques where we can achieve more in the next 10 years than we've achieved in the last 100,? said Mayo Clinic president and CEO Denis Cortese. The team at the legendary non-profit medical coalition, however, stressed that the superscans were very much in the planning stage. Through a partnership with IBM, the Mayo Clinic will develop the Medical Imaging Informatics Innovation Center, which will focus efficient health screening and imaging. But this isn?t the first time the PS3?s power has been employed for fighting disease. Last year, Stanford launched its Folding@Home program, which borrowed processing muscle from the Sony gaming system to create protein-folding programs for fighting?and possibly curing?cancer. If the Mayo-IBM research proves successful, the fact that the Cell chips are already being so widely produced (PS3 sales hit 1.2 million during the holidays) could make it that much more affordable for smaller labs to improve their own image processing. Now you know why the system costs so much.... ?Brian Lisi Source: http://www.popularmechanics.com/blogs/scie...ws/4244295.html My TV arrived today, so once everythings setup im going:yes:old more often

FreqFace
This really doesn't have much to do with PS3 directly. It's just the same chip the PS3 uses being used for something else. The same chip that existed before the PS3 did. Good stuff though, whatever can help the cure of diseases. I especially like the idea of folding@home on your PS3. :)
t_r_nelson
The same thing is being applied to graphic cards' GPUs. The processing power of these 'specailized' chips are being looked at for any number of uses that required very large processing power.
ahhell
There is no sensationalism in that article at all. "A chip originally created for the PS3"
PyX
I've always wanted to fold or anything on my PS3, but never understood how to fold in the background, ie while playing a game. It's as if I had to let folding@home run in the foreground. Can anyone shed some light on this please?
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted January 11, 2008 Author Subscriber² Share Posted January 11, 2008 (edited) I've always wanted to fold or anything on my PS3, but never understood how to fold in the background, ie while playing a game. It's as if I had to let folding@home run in the foreground. Can anyone shed some light on this please? You can't fold whilst playing a game, folding is pretty intensive. What you can do though is turn on folding as a "screensaver" thanks to the recent update. So if you finish playing your PS3 game and leave your PS3 on it will automatically start folding after say 10 mins of inactivity. Edit: Infact maybe im wrong about the above, but im certain the new update said something about that, lemme go research... Edit2: Nah im right, Exit the application and go back to the Xross Media Bar. Hit the triangle button when the Folding@home icon is selected. Choose Auto-Start from the right-hand menu and then choose idle time detection. For example, I choose 10 minutes. Now if you are not using the console for 10 straight minutes, Folding@home will run automatically so you don’t have to think about it anymore. You can even turn your TV off and you don’t have to be connected to network all the time. Folding@home will only access your network about 2-3 times a day.To make sure Folding@home runs automatically, all you have to remember is after playing your favorite holiday game is to quit the game but leave the console powered on. Folding will not happen if you turn the console off. Source: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2007/12/25/...-2-foldinghome/ That's all you need, folding whilst gaming would be impractable on a console. What you should also do which I will be now, is keeping the PS3 folding whilst playing gamers on yer 360 ;) Edited January 11, 2008 by Audioboxer
