PS3 Production Cost Down 50%, Sony Finally Breaking Even

Recommended Posts

While the PlayStation 3 cost Sony somewhere around $800 when it was launched in Nov. 2006, Sony has told Business Week that the PS3 now costs about $400 to produce?or right around the cost of their console 40GB console (and frankly, the 80GB version can't be costing Sony much more).

While the news in no way implies it's time for another price drop, we wouldn't call it crazy for Sony to have "$300 PS3" scribbled into theiWorst Case Scenario, Holy Crap How Are We Still in Third Placei> handbook.

This could be a good oportunity for Sony.

A slight price drop timed with the incoming BR increased demand.

^That would be very smart! $299 for a 40GB and $399 for an 80GB! That would be great! Although it might not happen now, I hope it happens for the launch of the BIG games like MGS4, LBP, Killzone2. :D

Very good news. Looks like things are turning around.

$300 plus the fact Sony might be distributing DivX Movies, possibly by the PLAYSTATION Store. This is interesting indeed.

Good news for Sony. After a rough 2007 and now coming into a what seems to be a great 2008, Sony really deserves this big break.

Totally agree, i really wanna see Sony succeed (Y)

We all love Sony and want them to succeed, that's why we post in the Sony Gaming forum. :D I hope that a $299 40gb does come out.

Many new customers will want to go Blu, but to buy a BD player, they need it to be affordable. $299 is affordable for now I guess. :p

^^^That wouldn't make any sense, though.

All those games are huge hits that will push plenty of consoles at the current price. Why lose money on a bunch of consoles when you can break even and sell probably almost just as many anyways?

Stif, I did not think of it that way, you are right. Then maybe during the summer they will lower the price, as most summers have no good games released, and that might push more out during the summer.

PSX as in PS1?

You can do that right now.

Well, I'm not buying an 60/80? gig for that, and I can't play my japanese games (eg. tobal 2, samurai shodown rpg, gundam battle master, and final fantasy international). the 40 gig without the option to use my old pads = lame. i hate the R2 / L2 on the sixaxis...

40gb can play PS1 games as well. It's just PS2 games it can't play.

Uhh obviously you can't play imports, PSX/PS2 games are region locked.

sony might be able to gain ground on the wii and 360 if they drop the price and these games come out and are a big hit.

I pretty much expect the PS3 to outsell the Xbox 360 this year. Bluray will be one of the highest selling points, and so will MGS4 be. PS3 is going to be a good system this year.

With a 50% cost reduction, how about $249 20GB, $399 60GB, $499 120GB, same units spec wise?

Those prices would never happen. People would be stupid to buy anything but the 20gb and then purchase a larger HDD themselves.

that's what i meant. all of my PSX games are japanese, except i think two?

as far as not being able to play, that's my mistake. i thought the backwards ps2 incompatibility applied to the PSX stuff too.

if it goes cheaper than 360 they will certainly go up alot in sales (certainly when their are no big games for 360 this year compared to ps3)
