My brand new PS3 just broke...

Recommended Posts

I recently sold my 60gb ps3 and a few games, and bought a 40gb to replace it (reasons being its quieter, and the 60gb's were going for good money on eBay). Unfortunately, on my 3rd/4th day of owning the 40gb, it refuses to read any game, blu ray, dvd or cd discs.

The first time the problem started was yesterday watching spiderman 3 blu-ray, when it just paused about 5 minutes from the end. I switched it off and on again, tried every disc i had to hand, and nothing. It seems to be that the discs don't spin up anymore, all that shows in the XMB is the small loading sign in the top right corner (no discs show up in the music/video/game menus).

The strange thing though, is that today it worked again, but now its stopped again, almost as if its only not working once the console warms up a bit (which is still not hot compared to the heat the 60gb through out).

As it stands, its not working again, so it looks like a call to Sony in the morning. Its just disappointing that i never had a single issue with the 60gb owning it from UK launch, and the 40gb craps out in a couple of days.

This is bloody annoying.

internet store..... :pinch:

i spoke to sony, and they say speak to the store. so i just need them to come and collect/swap it via courier... from things i've read, people seem to be having more issues with the new 40gb than those before it, but that could just be that i'm only noticing the problem threads now i have one too...

I gotta say, that was a bad choice of action, to sell your 60GB. I mean they're selling for that kind of money is because they ARE worth more, they have hardware PS2 emulation. I would have kept it. But oh well... I say go to the ends of the earth to get a free (minus shipping and handling) PS3 replacement. Make them pay for it.

bad choice? now that depends. would it be a bad choice if i've never owned a ps2, therefore never owned any ps2 games? there's none that take my fancy either. simple fact was i don't need BC, nor the memory card slots.

i've sent an email to the store (hmv online), as they only have phone lines open from 8-6, so i'll see what they come back with...... bloody thing.

That's pretty bad luck, my 40gb has held up perfectly fine so far besides a crash on the burnout demo.

Hopefully you will get a new one soon enough, but it probably would of been safer to keep the 60gb one since there has been hardly any braking downs that I have heard of, but there seem to be a few more with the 40gb.

Definately, been quite a few people on Neowin alone with 40GB's having problems

Damn dude! To be perfectly honest, the 40gbs do seem to have a higher failure rate than the others. We had quite a few come back when they were released over here. But it doesn't seem to happen since the Christmas batch got shipped to us. Mine has been working perfectly ^_^ Hope you get it replaced without any hassle, it's truly sad when things like this happen. =[

remember to take a thing of canned air to it before you send it off, Dust voids the Warrenty

but on a serious note.. that blows, hope you get a replacement

I wouldn't "blame" the version though. I've got a 40Gb version and a collegue of mine has the 60Gb version. He had problems before, I didn't.

How is Sony at sorting out issues with their hardware?

Microsoft gets a bad rep for faulty hardware, but at least they do a lot to try and sort it, I wonder if Sony is the same (if not better).

In most cases we have read they are. And they don't take nearly as long as MS was/is.

well, it got sent back to the retailer today, so hopefully i should receive a new one in a few days... i'm guessing because it brand new (virtually), they'll just send me a new one back? at least i hope so...

there might be one problem though (depends how thorough in checking they are), as i forgot to pack the controller cable. doh!

we'll soon see.

yeah? oh well. its just my thinking that hmv online won't have their own repair service, so all they would do is send it back to sony for a refund themselves. thats where i understood all the refurb consoles to come from (ie, i would get a replacement from hmv - likely brand new - hmv get refund/replacement from sony - sony fix it and stock as a refurb item for when they deal with ps3 problems directly...)???

theres a hell of alot if assumption here, but i want a new console!!!!! not a crappy refurb.
