I must admit this is looking alot better than what Microsoft is offering with XBOX360. Seems likely that when i do get my PS3 i will have to get this.

?99 seems very steep, I've seen Dual Tuner PVR's cheaper than that over here. However I'd be very tempted if it supports BBC HD and Channel 4 HD.

?100 is good for a dual tuner PVR, standalone PVRs that only have single tuners cost more than that.

Fair enough!

For anyone who cares, here is an early look at it from GDC 07 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJQSAxqGCTU

I'm sure we'll here more at GDC this year:yes::

Too expensive really. I would still buy it if I get a PS3, but its still too much.

where lol

Argos sell quite a few dual tuner PVR's for under ?100.

And they include a 160GB hard drive.

All the playTV thing is is a twin tuner. No decoder in it, no hard drive etc. So why are they charging ?100 for it when you can get proper twin tuner PVR's for less.

The only thing this has that others don't is the ability to stream to your PSP, and it can record HD (though god knows how long its gonna be before we get HD channels over freeview).

Yup, spot on

Is this a world wide release, or is it still just going to be available in PAL areas?

Sounds like a fairly good product but i don't really want to pay ?100 for it. If the price was lower then i would probably have been interested.

oh yeah right. We all (or most of us) have already dropped +$900 on the PS3, entra controller and games.

Not to mention that some of us (my self included...) spent $75 USD to import a DualShock 3. So spending ~$195 USD on a dual DVR that records HD AND also allows you?to?view?TV?on?y?our?PSP.

We'll all bitch and moan about it at first... but once it drops about $50 we'll j:pp on it :p

They really need slapping around for advertising it in the UK as HD.

There's zero HD content on freeview and current plans for HD freeview involve them changing the transmission method from DVB-T to DVB-T2 and the codec from mpeg2 to mpeg 4 for the HD channels. DVB-T2 spec's have yet to be finalised and there's no way they can provide an upgrade for it via firmware.

I guess they get away with advertising it as HD ready because it can record mpeg2 and 4 over DVB-T, but unless ofcom stop being idiots(unlikely) and use the released analogue spectrum for standard DVB-T mpeg2/4 HD broadcasts its useless.

I don't know how it is in other EU countries tho, but afaik its not that different (I'll wiki it later)

QFT

The state of HD broadcasts in the UK is absolutely stupid atm. I don't know about cable, cos I can't get it. But for Sky HD, the box is around ?250 and then you have to pay ?10 a month. And as you said, there is very little hope of HD stuff over freeview in the next few years at least.

Its not the only thing ofcom need a beating for aswell lol. Their the ones who have allowed the broadband market to be messed up so much with "unlimited" deals that have a tiny cap.

They are advertising it for all of Europe, and I presume places in europe have HD broadcasting. Check my youtube video, it shows HD broadcasting in Germany - The device was first showcased in Germany.

For everyone asking questions, watch the video most of your q's are answered. The device is being released in some of the big European countries on the 28th, with more countries to follow.

None of those channels being shown are HD, HDTV in Germany is limited to pay satellite and cable as far as I can tell at the moment.

I think its only France that have any plans to launch a free HDTV service over DVB anytime soon (France's version of freeview is called TNT) They ran a few trial's last year

The device is future proof, but only if countries choose a certain way to broadcast HDTV. Its looking like we're not going that way in the UK, so they shouldn't advertise it as such (in the UK)

Its a good device overall, its just overpriced for what it is, your paying for the ability of using your PS3 really...

Its not the only thing ofcom need a beating for aswel

heh, don't get me started. :p

Seems like a great product for playstation 3. Although i rather stick with my media center and xbox 360 as a dvr. I enjoy using my pocket pc phone to watch live tv or recorded media on the go or any laptop outside my home with an internet connection.

so this is only for Europe when it hits that market?

:(

even the youTube video only mentiones non-US territories

Yes. I heard that was because the US doesn't have a service like Freeview? I could be wrong though.
