TEX4S
Im running ubuntu 7.10 through VMWare - I want to install the drivers for my video card and have downloaded the appropriate file from nVidia. nVidia's instructions simply say, "Type "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.07-pkg1.run" to install the driver. NVIDIA now provides a utility to assist you with configuration of your X config file...." Im assumming I need to open terminal and type that - but it doesnt work. I guess the problem is it is a bin file ?!? Im completely new to linux but want to learn - instead of spending 20 hours reading how to do some mundane tasks - I hope a neowinian might be able to tell me "just do this..." I guess the issue is since the directions are not aimed towards an uber-n00b, Im not able to do the simple things nor do I know where anything is Any help on the nVidia drivers would be appreciated - and if someone knows of a website w/ a great tutorial - Thank You. sonrah
Just to be fair to yourself, it isn't a ubuntu n00b question, but a virtual machine n00b question. Basically, the virtual machine uses it's own virtual graphics card, and not the one that's actually in your computer, so you'll have to install the drivers for the virtual graphics card. So, what you actually have to do is install the VMWare tools for linux instead of your nvidia graphics driver. Digitalx
Don't get me wrong but vmware doesn't have video acceleration via hardware ? anywho https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=472909 http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Gutsy#NVidia_Driver http://www.howtoforge.com/howtos/linux/ubuntu

Foub
Don't get me wrong but vmware doesn't have video acceleration via hardware ? anywhohttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=472909 http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Gutsy#NVidia_Driver http://www.howtoforge.com/howtos/linux/ubuntu But I think that Ubuntu does have them for VMware virtual machine in the Administration menu under Screens and Graphics. Its a choice for video driver under the Graphics Card Tab for Screen 1 at the bottom of the listings of drivers that are available there.
Michael Lacey
It is simpler to learn Ubuntu by installing it directly on a machine rather than using VMWare.
markwolfe Veteran Posted January 19, 2008 Veteran Share Posted January 19, 2008 When installing an OS (any OS, Linux, Windows, whatever) the guest is presented virtual hardware, so the Ubuntu in your setup cannot see and directly control your nVidia video card. If you want to set up Ubuntu with full graphical acceleration, then you might want to set up dual boot, either traditionally with its own partitions, or through wubi (which I have never tried before, but hear good things about).
