PS3 Blu-Ray

Recommended Posts

is the blu ray player on the PS3 as good of quality as a stand alone player? Not really many games I find interesting on the PS3 that the 360 doesnt have but if it's the same as the stand alone, i'll go ahead and get the PS3.

Sure the PS3 is the most future proof of blu-ray players since it has network connectivity and get an new player profile easily but do you have any proof that the PS3 is as good or better than a stand alone player would be quality wise?

I think the quality is top notch, but the fact it isn't a newer, dedicated player may make it slower. That would be my assumption.

My PS3 looks and sounds the same as my Panasonic BD30K. The PS3 loads movies much faster, but the fan is louder. However, the Panasonic had a couple hiccups, momentary freezes, on Sunshine, which the PS3 did not. That's the only movie of the 20-30 I own so far that has had any issue on the Panasonic but it still was annoying. From what I've read that movie is causing slight issues on most of the non-ps3 players though.

The PS3 is probably the fastest blu ray player out there, because Cell is fast enough to be able to handle the excessively bloated Java code. A lot of standalones struggle and can take upwards of 2 minutes from turn on to video on screen.

what about audio decoding though? i remember reading that a certain codec was not available for the 1st gen players that would be implemented in future ones... does that apply to the ps3 as well?

i think it was dolby truehd or something :-/

Ok I found this article which basically says the PS3 is as good if not better than stand alone players besides from the loud fan issue.

Shootout: 3 Blu-ray Disc Players

The new 40gb ps3 isn't loud at all what so ever. I think it may be quieter than my HD DVD player actually. I can't even hear my PS3 when it is on over the sound my computer makes.

That article is a year old now, some of the things mentioned in the PS3 section aren't true. Namely, it says that the PS3 does not upscale standard DVD's which, because of the upgradable nature of the PS3, it does in fact upscale now - and it does it very well indeed. Also FWIW, I don't find the fan on my 60GB PS3 loud at all. Far from it. :D

Wow. I'm sorry, but that assumption is laughible.

Also i've got to say the 40GB PS3 is almost silent, I leave it folding most of the day and I don't notice it. Far quieter than the xbox or even just the xbox hddvd drive. I'm using my ps3 solely as a blu ray player now instead of games machine and it does a fantastic job, I use my 360 for gaming as i've come to hate the cheap tacky sixaxis controller, just horrible to play with.

yeah, my 40gb is pretty silent, i can hear a hum but not enough to notice. however i've had about 2 moments where the fans have kicked in on full speed, so loud i had to turn off the system lol. :/

No, it was a basic assumption. I admit I was wrong though, so maybe you should try and not pick a fight.

lol that happened to me once when i was trying to move the ps3 around. i think i ended up covering up the vents and it went berserk on me. i thought it was gonna take off. i freaked out and shut it off!

Thanks for letting me know :D I did realise that the article was old but thought lots of what it had to say would still be relevant.

Well, maybe the PS3 can't do DTS-HD, but is it a big loss? Not only would you need to buy a much more expensive Blu-Ray player, but you need a good A/V receiver to get the full DTS-HD support.

So for $400, I think the PS3 is a nice player, even without DTS-HD. Oh, and it's a good Media Station and it can play games... Try that on any other Blu-Ray player.

Oh, I agree, I don't think my reciever will even do DTS. It does do PCM, so that's fine by me.

Just was pointing it out.

"it can also be used to route Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio bitstreams to an outboard receiver or processor equipped with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding." I don't know who to believe :s damn mixed messages :(

I guess check the AVS forums or something. I guess eventually the ps3 can decode every of the codecs, I think the problem was with bitstreaming. I seriously don't know about dts-hd or the others.

And back on topic, the ps3 is the mother of all disc players when compared to the ps2 dvd player, lol.

It's a really good player IMO, it has enough "options". The only things I'm missing from old fashioned standalones is subtitle capability in divx files. I guess!
