randomnut
Has anyone else had their PS3 suddenly just go nuts? Last night it was sat there quietly folding, and all of a sudden all the fans kicked in, made a huge amount of noise and was kicking out a lot of heat. This didn't stop until I unplugged the machine. Is this normal? What's it doing? Anyone elses done that? I have the 40gb version.
crazzyyfool
Maybe it needed more power as you were folding, hence the higher temp and fan noise?
wrack
Certainly doesn't sound normal. Have u tried since you unplugged it last night? Was there any nasty smell coming out of it or just the heat.
randomnut
There was no smell, just the fans on full blast and a lot of heat...? I doubt it was the folding as it was in full swing when it happened, and has not happened on it before?
EnzoFX
weird i had one weird thing happen to the ps3 here, maybe someone can shed light on it. I turned it on to stream an avi from a pc, but i think it was saying it was an invalid format, i was confused. I restarted the ps3, and this time it had the little thumbnail for the video, and selected it to play, it went to the black screen, then did nothing. Restarted it one more time, and then finally, it detected and played right away. Is your still working properly?
Sethos
Maybe you accidentally activated the on board grilling function? ( Sorry - Just had to :p )
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted January 23, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted January 23, 2008 Other members on this forum have had this happen once or twice, im sure Game has. I fold often and it's never happened. I'd say it's a safety feature, that when the PS3 reaches a certain tempature the fans kick in at full throttle. When you turn it off, it obviously cools down, and when turned back on returns to normal. Seeing as there aren't many reports of this, it's probably room temperature/other devices causing the PS3 to get a little bit hotter than it normally does. That's my guess anyway. +StevoFC MVC Posted January 23, 2008 MVC Share Posted January 23, 2008 I agree with Audioboxer...it just happens sometimes. Nothing to worry about most likely.
KoL Veteran Posted January 23, 2008 Veteran Share Posted January 23, 2008 yeah that happens. I fold a lot and it happens to me a few times. Nothing to worry.
xirtam
yeah, I wouldn't worry too much, mine does that when I leave the central heating on too long :p
jimbo11883
Maybe it was passively, or doing really low active cooling, until it reached a certain temperature point, then kicked the fans in to keep it within certain temperature limits. +StevoFC MVC Posted January 23, 2008 MVC Share Posted January 23, 2008 There is a Folding@Home client for the PS3
sn00pie
Don't worry. It's happened to me about 2-3 times. My old 60gb was like that about an hour into every game, my 40gb only does it once in a blue moon, I have it standing vertical now and so far it seems quieter...
randomnut
Hmmm yeah i've only noticed it since I moved it to a shelf under the TV, perhaps I should find somewhere to stand it vertical....
sn00pie
"Reports" indicated the PS3 was cooler when horizontal, but from personal "testing" I can say that it's the opposite for me and that my PS3 is significantly quieter vertical even though the top of the PS3 almost hits the top of my cabinet...

It happened, did it for a while and then stopped.
