Simon Veteran Posted January 23, 2008 Veteran Share Posted January 23, 2008 Alright, we're supposed to be releasing Shift 0.6 this weekend. I've been working on Gnome today (yay for snow days!), and pretty much all I need right now is the icon set and theme. We're also going to need a KDE theme (we don't need to make it). I'm looking for one, as is Mike (I think), but they're all... ugly (welcome to Linux :p). It seems like all of the good theme designers design for Gnome :(. It's obviously too late to make our own at this point, but something would be nice. With regards to the Gnome theme, when I was talking to MrEggsalad, he said he was going to do some work on it. Is that still happening? I think we can make the deadline, especially with another snowstorm expected here on Friday (I'm almost certain that'll be another snow day for me, they're calling it a "major system", and it's definitely cold enough around here :p). Finally, with regards to the distro itself, this is it. Once we're done 0.6, we're not starting over; there won't be another download of Ubuntu for us to start over on, what we have on Saturday is what we'll be using for the rest of the time. At least that's the way I'd like to see it, anyone object? Keep doing the kick-ass work everyone. I'm loving what I'm seeing.
Barney T. Administrators Posted January 23, 2008 Administrators Share Posted January 23, 2008 Thanks for the update, Simon. I also agree that we should stick with our current 0.6 and improve it until we release 1.0. No more starting from scratch. I belive that our goal should be to add packages and code with the goal of creating a DVD that has all of our versions on it. This will allow the user to chose what DM they want to boot into, and which packages they want to use with it. Also, I think that we need to concentrate on the customized packages for 1.0, as well as make absolutely sure that our installer works like a charm. Commodore Max
The KDE4 theme, along with new branding, since it's obviously a huge job, will have to wait until a future release.
Simon Veteran Posted January 23, 2008 Author Veteran Share Posted January 23, 2008 I still don't have all the branding we had in the last release, though ;) So far, I know we need: the icon set, the wallpaper, the Firefox start page, and a usplash theme (256 colors, I'm looking into doing it myself as a simplified version of the wallpaper). I also made a GDM theme based on http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Avi...a9203be8669aa3f , replacing the background with our own.
markwolfe Veteran Posted January 24, 2008 Veteran Share Posted January 24, 2008 As soon as I am able to get a new PC, and dedicate my old one to Shift, I would be more than happy to work on taking whatever Gnome/KDE themes Shift uses as defaults and porting it into the Flux release. Simon Veteran Posted January 24, 2008 Author Veteran Share Posted January 24, 2008 On that topic, Mark, do you have any idea how to make Gnome and KDE apps... well, not suck so much in Flux? I'm talking from a design perspective here, the apps work fine. They just have the ugly default controls, widgets, etc. I'm building beta 1 of Shift 0.6 Gnome right now, I'll test it a little bit, then upload it to our server for internal testing. markwolfe Veteran Posted January 24, 2008 Veteran Share Posted January 24, 2008 Flux will use whatever gtk/qt theme set as default. My theme is plain grey, so I haven't tried coloring the different engines toanything in particular. Plain grey has just been fine with me.
Barney T. Administrators Posted January 24, 2008 Administrators Share Posted January 24, 2008 I also made a GDM theme based on http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Avi...a9203be8669aa3f , replacing the background with our own. Hopefully, it isn't in German. Thanks for the offer, Mark. That would be a nice plus for us!
Simon Veteran Posted January 24, 2008 Author Veteran Share Posted January 24, 2008 Hopefully, it isn't in German. Thanks for the offer, Mark. That would be a nice plus for us! Nope, already tested it :p And you'll be happy to know that the installer works as advertised.
Simon Veteran Posted January 25, 2008 Author Veteran Share Posted January 25, 2008 Alright, here's my list for Gnome: The critical list: • Boot menu background doesn't work • Evolution icon still in menubar • No splash page for Firefox • Background on startup is brown, not dark shift blue • Firefox 2 is still in the menu, or Firefox 3 is still installed • Languages in installer still there, but only english (should) work • Ubuntu icon on manubar violation of trademark • Installer icon violates trademark • Remove "About Ubuntu", replace with "About Shift"? • Final dist-upgrade The Known-but-noot-fix-until-0.7 • No usplash theme • gfxboot theme sucks Simple ideas for 0.7 • Xchat with link to Neowin servers • Replace grub with grub2 or gfxboot • Gnome 2.21/2.22 for Shift 0.7 • Testing todo • Test installer • Burn to cd, boot on mac mini, other computers just for the lulz • Test in parallels In addition, I have a mockup of a new gfxboot theme for 0.7. I would insert it into the post directly, but it's big. Also keep in mind that it will have an aspect ration of 4:3, I was just working with what I had (Max, any chance I could have the originals of the wallpaper?): http://img.skitch.com/20080125-g184as8q142...82kq66jnhag.png
