Best Buy discontinuing 80GB PS3

Recommended Posts

So is this only at best buy or everywhere else too? Because once I paid off my newegg preferred account, I was going to get one. I would really like to have backwards compatibility though. I do have a ps2 right now, but it's so much easier just to put everything in one system....I have no room for both as it is...

a friend of mine is looking into getting an 80gb PS3.

He just called Best Buy (in MA) and they told him that they currently do not have any and do not expect to get any more either.

So apparently... for what ever reason...it's true :(

Analyst: 80GB system abandoned due to sales

Best Buy isn't the only retailer getting rid of 80GB systems. GameDaily BIZ has heard from an unnamed corporate source (that isn't Best Buy) that something is definitely "afoot" but he "can't really comment (until the 80GBs are gone.)"

Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey who told GameDaily, "Sony is likely dumping the 80GB version because it has failed to meet internal sales projections." He added, "A recessionary environment will likely punctuate the 80GB version's relative and absolute retail sales disappointment. The recently released 40GB version is getting traction at retail, suggesting backward compatibility takes a backseat to the console's price point for current buyers." The successful sales of the 40GB system, versus the 80GB package, is likely refocusing Sony's efforts in this generation of hardware.

Of course, Sony is keeping mum on the entire situation. "SCEA does not comment on rumor and/or speculation. We have not made any announcements regarding manufacturing."

Good move, in my opinion. No one is really buying 80gb PS3's because the price difference is mute. This whole talk about backwards compatibility does not affect the average consumer because they want to play PS3 games, not PS1 or PS2 games.

The wireless and memory slot reader factored into my decision more than additional storage (easy user upgrade) and PS2 compatibility. If they could move at least the internal wireless, additional USB ports, memory card reader over to a cheaper model it would be a good move.

I'm actually glad it's not selling well and being dropped at these stores. It shows that consumers do have a price limit and that there needs to be a balance.

Didn't NPD say that the 80GB model was selling better than the 40GB one for the last quarter? If that's been disproved then oops on my part. I'm pretty sure they are dropping it just because SCEA is not going to manufacture the 80GB model's mobo when no other part of sony is. I think that's the part that's not cost effective for them.

I think some people put way too much emphasis on BC. I bought the 60GB model for that exact reason when it dropped to 499 and we found out it wasn't being made anymore. I have yet to put one of my 50+ ps2 games into my ps3. I'm more irked by the fact that the 40gb model doesn't have the chrome finish on the front, just the matte silver. I would not be able to handle that if my 60gb was ever to fail and a 40 replaced it. I guess I have a different kind of insanity than most posters here.

How about dropping the price of the 80GB to $400 and the 40GB to $300?

Console war over right there.

While that would be sensible, although still costly (400$ is still a lot for a console for most people), Sony probably want to get everything minimised to 1 model now.

They have received a good amount of flak for releasing different models all over the place, and rightly so. I frown on both Sony & MS for the amount of models they have steamed through this generation, nothing like the last generation where it was 1 model to do it all.

This probably happened to try and tackle the Wii with cheaper models.

Different coloured consoles are a different thing though.

I also believe they may be gearing up to full software BC at some point as well - Maybe offering PS2 games in the PSN store like the PS1 - But it would only make sense from a retail point of view to do that when the PS2 hardware/software sales die off.

If it's still selling in shops, offering games on PSN will only **** off your retailers by cutting them out with cheaper prices.

Well, I'm glad I've got the PS3/80Gb, it's hybrid BC will be able to play more game, better, than full software BC.

I've got so many wires behind my entertainment center, if I can reduce it (not having a PS2 AND a PS3) is a good thing! The PS2 still sell for $129 here. Going from PS3/40Gb to PS3/80Gb is $100 more and you double the HDD, more USB ports, memory card readers and PS2 BC !!! So I would say that it's a good $100.

Lets see how many games will not work %100 with full software BC....
