Simon Veteran Posted January 24, 2008 Veteran Share Posted January 24, 2008 Alright, so I was just talking with Mike about 0.6, and what we are going to do after it. We came to the following conclusions: 0.6 is the "rebirth" of Shift: essentially marking our transition to Ubuntu. 0.7 is where the fun begins: it's where we throw in the big features of Shift. 0.7 will be a long series of releases, we have a lot to do 0.8 is polish and minor feature additions. This will be a shorter series than 0.7, but not short 0.9 is bug fixing only; feature freeze. We need to have 0.9.something perfect, and then make that Shift 1.0 1.0 is our first stable, official release. Bug fixes continue through apt-get only. We don't have to worry about after 1.0 yet, since it's a ways off. What do you guys think?
kinetix63 Veteran Posted January 24, 2008 Veteran Share Posted January 24, 2008 With a lot to do on the 0.7 branch, I'd suggest you have staggered releases in order not to over exert yourselves. E.g: Shift 0.7 FR1, FR2, FR3 etc (FR meaning Feature Release). That way you can easily narrow down exactly what features can go in to each release so you're not trying to do everything at once. Exactly ;) That's what I meant by a long series. We'll have 0.7.1, etc., and likely the same for 0.8 and 0.9.

Barney T. Administrators Posted January 29, 2008 Administrators Share Posted January 29, 2008 Approved, since me and Simon came up with this :p We probably need to present this to the whole group at our next IRC meeting... just to make sure everyone is on board. Let me take a moment of everyone's time just to let you guys know where I stand as Shift is quickly moving up the ranks....... Up till now, we (or maybe I should say I) have been trying to get the "Shift" word out by keeping the distro in front of everyone's eyes.......... public-wise. This is because the more Shift is seen, the more it is recognized. And once people know this distro, the more chance of success we will have. Well..... I think we've done that. Now, I think we need to take the basis of Shift 0.6 and use it to add our own apps, scripts, designs, and whatever. The next release should have no hints of Ubuntu or Kubuntu. We need to make it our own, special distro that makes others envious of us. And we have a talented team to do just that. As a matter of fact, I got two applications from outsiders who want to join our team. That being said, we need to look at different people (or groups) who will: - take care of the publicity - review and update web pages, wiki, and other media tools - establish and update our repositories and organize a SVN - recruit qualified volunteers - test packages scripts (quality control) - graphics - develop the actual distro itself (including coders and script writers) Lots to organize, I know. But we are turning into a world class distro and we now have to concentrate on quality instead of speed at releasing. I suggest that we not release another version until at least 6 months, with the goal being to produce the very best that we can offer, We have the model distro now (0.6)... all we need to do is to add custom packaging, full branding, and some "knock-em dead" scripts. Later, we can think about a full DVD and maybe a 64-bit release. Just some thoughts. Well, I am off to surgery in a day. I will be back in a few days to torment you all... :) Cya around. Simon Veteran Posted January 29, 2008 Author Veteran Share Posted January 29, 2008 Sounds good to me, Barney. Maybe we should merge everything into a DVD now, though, instead of waiting until later. We can still offer CD versions with only one desktop manager, but from a developer perspective, there may be more to look at, but everything is in the same place.
