Flash Sites

Question

As the the life cycle of a web site comes to a close it times to begin planning the new site. Currently the past two versions of my site have been html, one in front page (the code was dreadfall) and once in Dreamweaver MX (code was better).

As i plan the new site i am thinking of moving away from html and having a site mad in flash. My flash ability is 0 but i am willing to learn and there is no rush so i can take my time. What is the perception (long word for me) of flash sites. I have heard that flash intros are out. Are load times relative fast on a 56k line? Any comments would be great.

Remember that search engines can not index the text if it's in flash, which means any rankings you want will be shot to heck. I say no all flash sites are the best. It was nice and all for a time but they really are annoying.

You can paste your flash *swf into your html page and the search engine can find it. It is BEST not to use Flash brower to surf the page, some people like but Web site designer prefer not to. So paste your *swf each into each html page but you need *swf in the same directory.

Since you know 0 about flash, use the tutorial (it is fun) included in the Flash program. That really help you alot by knowing what Flash can do. If you want to know more about Flash, go buy books with CD-ROM that includes examples OR take Flash classes.

Many web designers are using Flash now because of varietry Flash can do and html cant do and using Flash is lot funner than html. But if you already know html, then Flash shouldnt be too hard for you.

I think when you working on the page, the size of page should be on your top right of currently project you are working. Firework has it. ACTUALLY, why dont you work on Firework first? That is what I did: Html --> Firework --> Flash.

"Trials and errors" <---- should get you going. :)

:D

There are also accessability issues with all Flash pages (not sure if this is an issue for you). I think Flash websites can be for the right purpose and if done well. The learning curve to do a complete Flash site could take some time though.

well i love flash, but not when there's too much. if you want to check out a site i built with flash, then check out my band's site. sorry about the popups but it's the best we can do right now...

http://audioutcasts.cjb.net

it's actually three different frames and not fully flash. i like the way it works. check it out and see if you like that type of design.

flash sucks. well, most of the time. flash is good for a few things:

-ads

-replacement of graphics with a compact animation format

-specialzed applications (games and other actionscripting goodness)

DON'T USE FLASH AS YOUR INTERFACE It's a horrible way of doing things and will KILL your site. It allows you to introduce non-standard interface elements to the site and kills usablity. Flash is fine for graphics, but if you have to click anywhere in a flash animation to navigate the site, you're doing something wrong. Header graphics, small logos, those types of things are great for flash. You can really do some snazzy stuff. I just don't want to be clicking on something that *sorta* looks like a button if I happened to think about it the right way....

Also, read this for embedding flash while staying XHTML compliant: http://www.alistapart.com/stories/flashsatay/

Ahh the good old Flash sites. I remember having one of those...took about 5 mins to load 2 pictures and a navigation bar. I don't really like full sites with Flash but little animations, intros and logos are fine by me.

I like plain simple sites as well has highly graphical sites. If you have the ability to produce killer flash interfaces go for it!

My suggestion would be to have your index page contain options for flash based interface or HTML interface before proceeding.

Good luck!

If you do plan on going down the flash route, I would suggest you wait until you know a lot about it. I would say it is essential to know how to optimise you flash movies with correct use of symbols and actionscripting. This will give you smaller file sizes so the end user doesnt have to wait :)
