lothodon
i wonder if anyone might know the answer to this, as calling best buy is a futile effort... i have a coupon for 20% off any hd dvd or blu ray player from best buy. the back specifically states it cannot be used for the 360 add on player, but says nothing about a ps3. anyone have a clue as to whether or not bb considers the ps3 a player that i could use this on? would be the nail in the coffin so to speak for my hesitation to get a ps3, since it'd bring it down to the potential price cut that might or might not happen anytime soon. kak
It is advertised as one enough, but they'll probably tell you that its a game system that happens to play BDs. However, its worth a shot.
+Dick Montage Subscriber² Posted January 25, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted January 25, 2008 Depends how much they want to make a sale I guess.
lothodon
i'm thinking since they specify the xbox as NOT included, they would have done the same for the ps3? it's a long ass drive to bb and it's REALLY cold in wisconsin and i'd hate to get there and be told no. i've tried in vain calling them and it'd be better to just ask a wall. +Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted January 25, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted January 25, 2008 99.9% sure they won't give you 20% off a PS3. Does it say "standalone" anywhere on the coupon? Worth a shot, but I really doubt it will work. They will just say the PS3 is a games console.
nitroxhotshot
yea, id try it, but would it be better to buy a proper blue ray player? Im sure the quality would be better.
lothodon
yeah, but a blu ray player won't play ps3 games, and it's all about the games for me. recently divorced, no kids (other than me) so i want the games too. says nothing about having to be a stand alone, just the exclusion about pioneer elite and xbox. Not sure about quality but the PS3 is the fastest blu-ray decoder(?) on the market.. Once you pop in the BD and press play it only takes 10 seconds compared to other standalones where it can take much longer
kak
yea, id try it, but would it be better to buy a proper blue ray player? Im sure the quality would be better. The only differences he would be able to find in a standalone were out of the box DTS MA [which is not out yet iirc] or TrueHD via bitstream. I believe that is the main concern with the PS3. As far as PQ goes, I guess it could upconvert better, but it wouldn't be that noticable. The PQ of BDs should look exactly the same.
lothodon
720p hdtv for now, i'm damn sure the ps3 would be just fine as my sole dvd/blu player...and games.
+StevoFC MVC Posted January 25, 2008 MVC Share Posted January 25, 2008 you could just call the store and ask you know...
lothodon
you could just call the store and ask you know... too easy for them to just say no over the phone. if i go in person and talk to the manager (who i kind of know, spend a lot of time there), i think i'd have a better chance. just thought perhaps a bb employee or someone in the know could give me some info. +StevoFC MVC Posted January 25, 2008 MVC Share Posted January 25, 2008 or they could have said yes and you would know already. ;)

Is this coupon 20% of a purchase... or specific items? I honestly haven't seen a 20% off coupon... although I work in Home Theater and Audio [bBY Employee here] Edited January 25, 2008 by shockz
+StevoFC MVC Posted January 25, 2008 MVC Share Posted January 25, 2008 }Is this coupon 20% of a purchase... or specific items? [bBY Employee here] It specifically says for HD DVD or Blu Ray players. I never read the back because I have both already, but I got the same coupon.
shockz
I'm betting that the coupon is more than likely for a stand alone player, but I'm not quite sure. In Home Theater we have something called an HD Advantage where you can save some money when you purchase a TV (over 999)... some of the deals are 100 dollars off the tv when you buy a bluray player... until recently this excluded the PS3, but starting last week they included it in the deal. Call the store again... say you've been waiting patiently... but have had wait so long that you were forced to hang up. Indicate you'd like to talk to a manager or media supervisor. If they continue to put you in a hold loop just call another store and tell them the same thing. I agree that the phone system at our stores suck... even as an employee when I need to call another store i'm usually on hold for 5-15 minutes. We're just always busy with sales that we can't ever get to the phone. I apologize for your wait on the lines, but keep trying. Usually I don't give a deal over the phone (for example if the coupon wouldn't work with the ps3) however if you come into the store I usually work something out (maybe not 20%) but I work with you on the pricing. I'm not saying they will do the same thing, but you've got a better chance of working something out going into the store than doing it over the phone. bl4ck5un
It's a game console that can play BDs, so in short i would say no. period.

spenser.d
but the coupon also mentions computer drives of those types which are not stand alone players by any means. why specifically mention the xbox add on and computer drives and NOT the ps3? Because the PS3 is generally classified as a Videogame Console and it's probably generally assumed not to be confused with anything else. Though I could see how people could be confused as one of Sony's ads for the PS3 doesn't show any gaming, but just a bunch of Bluray movie clips and clearly adverts the PS3 as a bluray player. We obviously can't answer your question and you seem to be getting short with some people that are trying to help. You're going to have to end up going there and asking them or calling them and asking them to find out for sure. -Spenser
lothodon
i'm not getting short with anyone, except you now. didn't think i was at all anyway, and apologies if i was. got it by the way. the manager was very helpful.

It says there excluding computer drives, the ps3 is technically a computer. Because the 360 is probably the console they sell the most.
bangbang023 Veteran Posted January 25, 2008 Veteran Share Posted January 25, 2008 I know for a promotion they have in Home Theater where you can say money if you buy an installation and a high definition player, the PS3 is included as an HD player. You may be able to use that against them.
