Home in ten simple steps

Rather than huge mansions, can I just buy a small place?

You get a small/flat style appartment by default for free. (the one you see if you look at any Home Open Beta walkthrough video leaked by a tester on youtube)

"Huge mansions" will cost as they are part of the micro-transactions scheme - Or last time Sony discussed Home they were anyway.

Just like a certain % of the furniture/appartment content will be free, some of it micro-transaction and some of it rumoured to be earned like achievements in games.

what i meant by state of the art, i meant that it's not some experimental research just now developed tool, but that isn't actually available to the public in any kinda way. That's what i meant, any company can buy top of the line servers. Period.

That's also why I said a server is just a server. I of course was not saying a home made server with a pentium 1 was in any way like a server with 40 cores. etc. etc.

"...Xbox Live continues to look more dated by the month."

That's a ridiculous statement. XBL is what drives MS to success, until Home does that, and works as good as XBL then they can start saying things like that.

Why does every informative piece of info have to turn into an argument. Can't we all just get along? I understand what you're saying Audio... I also see the point was to show that Sony is trying something new. In a way it's like they've realized that Live does what it does perfectly and they want to try something new. But some people here seem to take it as e-penis competition, when really, it's just technical information. Remember what Neowin used to be like?... ;)

Wow, that article is complete arse.

'Constantly updated'? They said that about the playstation store, and the things pretty bare, and how long has the thing been out?

Xbox live looking more dated by the month? Damn, that comment is so silly it's not even worth going into. Live has so many features PSN doesn't it's unbelieveable. Integrated friends list, etc etc etc. I feel like i've dropped 10 IQ points reading that drivel.

And hard to believe as it may be, i'm not a fanboy, I own both consoles. Live is just the better experience.

post is spot on. i laughed at the article. it's one thing to be biased.. it's another to be fanboy.. but the article goes above and beyond.. into that of a gob of blatant lies and fallacy. it's laughable, really. we'll see what it's really like when (if) it comes out this year.. because even as the fanboys must admit, sony's 'promise' is never truly a case of reality.

after reading this thread im even more convinced that people are spiteful and bitter for no reason what so ever , everyone is entitled to their opinion and its is their opinion deal with it , stop giving people grief over such petty stupid things , its a console not life or death , thanks audio for the article :)

poor audioboxer, people don't seem to understand what your saying, I do, makes perfect sense, whether this newer technical feat works out is debatable, and that's what some of you are arguing, audioboxer simply isn't. I won't argue this point either, we will simply have to see. Don't be quick to judge something you haven't tried.

For the person saying the backend on home is lousy? how in the hell would you know that? just because PSN is free? So sony must have used the cheapest components? Well then I must ask for sources. And for example (prob a bad example), lets say they get the cheapest network cards, as opposed to some glitzy fancy card Microsoft is using (I seriously doubt it!), so? A network card is just a network card, a server, is just a server. I don't mean to downplay the complexity of the kind of work that goes into projects like these, but surely its not something that requires state of the art hardware/software. I guess some people think Microsoft is running some Future-Proof servers, from space!

Do you even realize how stupid that post sounds? A server is just a server, a nic is just a nic... pfft.

First of all, I guess you need to have designed a network before you can understand the complexities and costs involved. Teamed NICs, proper clustering and support to provide a reliable service, high bandwidth links with regional failovers, the list goes on. Every element of network design can be done on the cheap and nasty, or expensive and rock solid. Paying for live, you can tell the difference. On PSN, how often does new content appear? Once in a blue moon? Even so, there's no rush on new content, since it never appears. Yet download speeds are awful.

Unless there's some serious investment in the PSN backend, when there is a rush for home when it's finally released, if the current state is anything to go by the connectivity and speed alone will be enough to drive users away.

Connection problems? Probably regional, even so it's no excuse. I've had 3 disconnects TODAY, and it's *not* my connection.

Content appears as schedueled, once every week.

Thursdays for europeans

Fridays for americans

Everyday for japanese I think :p

My download speeds are awful on LIVE - because MY speeds and my friends speeds are awful on LIVE, does that make LIVE infrastructure crap?

Perhaps you should speak with your ISP make sure theyre not having any issues with PSN - Tiscali blocked all cod4 play on PSN for some reason..

My experience has been rock solid

Thursday for both actually.

But yeah, every week :) (not once in a blue moon as some seem to think lol)

And I have never had connection problems other than those caused by my own router since I got the PS3 on 23rd March last year ;)

Holy moly, you sound like the fox news team.

"Have you ever seen Home/read about it/watched the vidoes on it?"

"NO I just go by my opinion that Sony always LIES sir!"

"But we've seen the leaked closed beta vidoes and half these functions are already implemented"

"I don't care I go by the internet research that Sony ALWAYS LIES sir!"

Let me educate you,

1 - True

2 - Assumed to be true, no evidence on how often often is yet, but look at my post on page 1 or 2 and the amount of things that can be updated.

3 - Assumed to be true, the closed beta size must be around 500mb.

4 - True

5 - True

6 - True

7 - Assumed to be true, the leaked closed beta videos show someone going into the theatre and watching a trailer of lemmings.

8 - Sony said game developers can hold exclusive events, but we've not seen this materialize yet.

9 - Nothing on this has been shown yet

10 - True

I've just proven to you 5 things (True) are non debatle, have been shown working. The others, 4 of them have been shown working in some state/told to us and only 1 thing about sports/concerts I've not heard anything about.

So I ask you HOW ON EARTH can an article reporting facts/things we've already seen be "biased" and "fanboyish".

You do release there is a closed beta going on where normal PS3 owners take part? They show us a lot of the progress albeit their builds are clearly outdated to what is going on behind the scenes.

Sony, while I know you won't believe it anyway, told us towards the end of last year to expect some form of a open beta in Q1 2008 - I expect to hear about that at GDC.

Maybe if you done a bit more research into Home mate, you'd know more about it.

hats off to you audio, who for some reason seem to keep fighting with calmness and logic against a sea of fanboys scared that their e-penises will shrink when home comes out! lol. just like dealing with chicks, there are some arguments you are just not going to win, even if your right! when people say home is good- for whatever reason- people will automatically think they are saying live is BAD. i pay for live, i love live and for all intensive purposes i will continue to pay and use live over home (even though i will get home and use it not as much), but even i can accept that home is going to be more advanced than live. not advanced in the sense that it does more things than live- NO- more advanced on a presentational level. what live is (and its simply beautiful for this) is its simplicity in functionality. everything is a couple of button clicks away. everything is organized. with trophies and playing games in the "arcade" and watching movies in the theatre home will basically be doing everything live will but it will put it in a pretier presentation for mainstream audiences. a lot of you guys say audio's argument has no water, but i think its the other way around and you guys are arguing for the sake of arguing. lol just my 2cents ;) GL audio- your a better man than me! lol

ohhh and i forgot, one cool addition is the fact that you should be able to talk to a bunch of people at once in home- i can only do this in live in a game lobby like halo 3 or cod4

Imagine inviting the neowin GH over to your appartment for a discussion on gaming/consoles - LOL

End up in an all out brawl with your appartment getting trashed

seriously, no one is insulting Live, I for one admire everything MS has done with it. Here's to simplicity. One of the reason's i'm welcoming live is to see the overall effect it has with the gaming community, that is gamers, developers, and even microsoft, if/what they do in response. Maybe a slight update to their UI, or maybe the ability to customize it more.

We know, that's what ive been stressing for a few pages in this topic. It seems some thought otherwise though, with some of the replies.

When I compared Live and Home it was on specific technical merits - Not on the integrity of the whole service and all the features it offers.

The only time I'll happily face Home off against Live in a conversation is a) Once it's finally released to see what Sonys first efforts are like, and then b) At regular intervals throughout each consoles lives as Home/Live are updated.

That's the best way to draw fair comparisons IMO.

Initially we'll have a good idea of how Home will stand, and then over time we'll see if it flops, does as well as/is better than Live or if *gasp* everyone agrees both of them are great, "non-comparable" and can co-exist.

And to be fair, I think the last one will probably be the most likely (Y)
