PS3 Component cables not working?

Recommended Posts

Hey,

I just bought some 3rd party component cables for my PS3 ( Brand is called Datel ) since my 360 is using the HDMI Port.

First thing i did was remove the HDMI cable, plug in the component cables, set 'Input 2' on the TV to "Component" yet i get no picture.

Is there any way to reset the settings, perhaps my PS3 still thinks It's using the HDMI cable - Perhaps I'm missing something else?

/ Michael

Hold down the power button when turning on till you hear it beep (about 5 seconds).

That is how you reset the display! Should go back to 576i.

Thank you, it worked (Y)

( Except, no Sound? Even though it's set correctly in the audio options. )

Strange... what setting do you have it on?

When you say you bought a cheap cable was it off ebay? To be fair I've heard of Datel though, at least I think I have.

Set the Audio Output Settings to;

"Audio Input Connector / SCART / AV- MULTI"

There's only 2 other choices, HDMI & Digital Out ( None of them work either ).

I just checked the cables and the connectors, all are set up correctly.

Got the cables from a local webshop, so they are brand new.

You have all the connectors in the right parts on the TV?

My 3rd party Wii component cable was ridiculous, I think there is a red connector and an orange and on my Wii cable both were the exact same colour - 50/50 chance of me getting it right, and I got it wrong  Just had to swap them around.

Few things it could be - Is there custom sound options on the PS3, like you may have DTS or 5.1 sound turned on when you don't support that?

Is there any options on your TV for muting sound on the AV you are on? On my Bravia each AV, and the Digital TV selection itself have independant controls. For example I can mute my 360 on HDMI 1, but when I switch to HDMI 2 audio plays fine on my PS3 - In other words there are independant mute controls, its not one button mutes all.

Lastly it could be the cables somehow, trying connecting the PS3 back up over HDMI and seeing if sound works?

For the "Audio Input Connector / SCART / AV- MULTI" option there are no 'custom' options, you just click it and it sets everything up automatically.

No, global mute here :p ( Yes i checked it wasn't muted )

May very well be the cables, HDMI worked fine yesterday when i was playing, sound & picture.

After a quick google, seems like I'm not the only one with this problem.

The red is in the red and the white is in the white slot, i checked three times now.

:o why are you going from hdmi to component? HDMI is greater than component when it comes to ouputting HD content.

Because i have 1 HDMI port and I'd rather use that with my Xbox 360 so i can get my 6.1 Surround sound too.

I use my PS3 about every other month, but It's such a hassle to change HDMI cable on the way my TV is placed, so I'd rather just get a Component cable.

I am trying to remember, I had a very weird issue with the sound when I first tried my component cable too, I just cannot remember for the life of me what it was, but it definitely did not work right away.

Okay, if I recall it had something to do with the output method of the audio, I had to select and deselect something or something like that.

Just play like a madman with your settings. Also if it is fairly new which I am guessing it is, why not just reset it to factor default settings? I think that may make life easier overall.

it is truly something stupid in the Advanced Settings, it did drive me nuts for like an hour, but I cannot remember what it was for the life of me. Sorry.

Can you not buy like an HDMI splitter pretty cheaply?

Or is it not possible to have 2 -> 1 HDMI port?

Yeah as DL said it will be something daft in the settings.

Well,

Now I've tried resetting to default settings with the same result.

I looked through just about every option that has to do with audio, yet i can't find anything.

My PS3 has frozen 2 times while going through the "Settings" Menu, amazing

Also, you could probably buy an HDMI splitter, that'll probably be 3x the price of the component cable for me, then i also need a second HDMI cable, plus those splitters don't even support HDMI 1.3.

So overall there's no point, i pay more and gain nothing.

The component cables are evil!

Clearly the PS3 wants to be run over HDMI ;)

The 360 doesn't use HDMI 1.3 either, I think it's 1.2 or 1.2a or something. Correct me if im wrong.

Whats the difference anyway?

Talking about the above mentioned features for the PS3, not worrying about what the Xbox 360 can do.

But mostly It's the price, why pay 3-4x the amount for something you don't notice.

Well, found a solution.

Apparently those two L&R Audio inputs next to the HD Component input does not work with the PS3 ( Works fine with the 360, PS2 & Gamecube ).

So i found one of those SCART connectors, for L&R audio + Yellow video cable - Plugged in the audio cables, placed the thing in the input corresponding to input 2, now it works.

Don't know why it won't work with the standard audio input but it works now :)

On my TV I have 4/5 holes (can't remember how many component is, think it's 5) that go vertically in a row that I connect component to. To the right of them I have these L/R sound options you seem to be talking about.

If I connect my component cables to them I get no sound, I have to connect everything to the points that are together and sound works.

I'm actually basing all of this on my Wii component cables that look like this though,

Is the PS3 cable similar?
