GameStop Also Hints at Discontinuation of 80GB PS3 - 120GB Incoming

Recommended Posts

Last week various reports/denials from Sony came in concerning the supposed demise of the 80GB PS3 model. It began with a leaked memo from Best Buy stating that the particular SKU would be phased out, then followed with the mysterious removal of the 80GB PS3 from Best Buy's website. However, new evidence has come in further confirming the ? what now seems like inevitable ? discontinuation of the 80GB S

A GameStop conference call was held today, which supposedly explained that the system was no longer being produced, in favor of a 120 GB or more model bundled with the Dual Shock 3 controller. There's no official date for when this enhanced model will be ready for purchase, or the price, for that matter, but it should be relatively soon. GDC is just a few short weeks away, so at the latest, it should turn up by then.

Sony, of course, offered no comment regarding the GameStop confirmation. We'll just have to wait for Sony to officially announce something.

Assuming if this is even true, is this 120Gb model (minus the addition of a Dual Shock 3) essentially exactly the same as the 60Gb/80Gb models? or is it going to have additional features? I'm guessing it probably is true, as I doubt Sony would just sit there and let the 120Gb 360 Elite go unchallenged :p I'm not too bothered about it anyway, if I need more space I can just buy a bigger HDD, they are fairly cheap these days too which is an added bonus :)

(N) Price cuts are better than hard drive upsizing.

120GB is better in the consumers eyes to face off against the elite as on the hardware front, as it's the only area the elite looks better on the box right now.

(a lot of people will say things like 40GB PS3? or a 120GB 360 Elite?)

Not a lot of people will know off the bat you can replace your internal PS3 hard drive, at least not with one that is a standard 2.5" drive and not some Sony branded drive.

They'll know after they buy the PS3 though :p

As for price cuts, we can be hopeful for an announcement at GDC :/

I need a new HDD. 40gb definitely doesn't cut it. But it's by far the best deal just to buy the 40gb anyways and add your own drive. In the US you can get a 160gb HDD for under $90.

I highly doubt it. It seems to be their goal now to lower manufacturing costs as much as possible. Unless full software BC comes out for all models I don't see the hardware being in it.

That would be forshame.. it wouldn't be a big deal for me but if they port the best PS2 titles on PSN I can go for that. :)

For some reason, I don't see that happening soon. Maybe, with this size of a hard drive, but downloading multi-GB files would suck. Of course, I guess some PS3 demos are now 1.5+ GB. However, if they have software emulation well enough to have PS2 games on PSN, why wouldn't the hard copies work as well?

MS do it with Xbox games, so im sure Sony are eager to follow (it's a cash flow).

If software emulation is implemented, hard copies would work as well - Compatibility rates would no doubt be lower than with full hardware BC though.

Sony are doing well with PS1 emulation on the PSP, so let's hope they can replicated that success with PS2 games on the PS3.

Sounds great, they announce this and give price cuts to the 40GB and 120GB I would be getting a 120GB!

40GB PS3 - $299.99

and

120GB PS3 - $349.99

That would be the sweet spot for the PS3! :D
