+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted February 2, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted February 2, 2008 Right the way things are setup in my house the router is downstairs as my internet access point is downstairs - Upstairs has NO telephone sockets. My PC and PS3 are located upstairs in my bedroom. When wanting to play PS3 movies on my PS3 I've been doing one of the following... a) Streaming from my PC which is wireless so it's wireless PC to router, router to Wireless PS3 - Works fine for SD content, lags on HD content. b) Copying files to PS3 hard drive through TVersity - Copying SD from my PC is fine, but HD content takes hour(s) as it's wireless PC to wireless PS3. Sometimes if I can be bothered with the hassle I lug the PS3 downstairs to plug directly into the router and copy from downstairs PC. Wired to wired then you see - And it only takes 10-15 mins to copy a 4+ GB file instead of 1 hour +. c) Stream movies off my portable drive connected to downstairs PC - HD content works better as it's wired PC to wireless PS3. Now my question is if I bought a second cheap router, and plugged it in in my bedroom to my PC and PS3, I have successful networked them right? As in the router upstairs WONT be used for the internet, but it will effectively just be used to play content from my PC on my PS3 over a wired connection, either by streaming or copying to the PS3 hard drive? Will this setup work ok first of all? And secondly will it cause any interference? As I'll be connecting to the router wirelessly downstairs for my internet on my PC, but I'll also have a router plugged into my PC, and on the PS3 I'll be connecting wirelessly downstairs but I'll also have a router plugged in? All of this wouldn't be an issue if I could run network cables upstairs but I can't as it would be too messy/too much work... or Sony stopped being crappy and supported NTFS drives, or such a thing as a Dual Layer re-writtable disc was buyable... I thought DL-RW discs existed but I can't find them anywhere? Overall though my setup just now is fine, it just prone to hassle from either dodgy streaming or slow copying and im wondering if there is other ways I can help myself. +StevoFC MVC Posted February 2, 2008 MVC Share Posted February 2, 2008 There would be no reason to buy a router in that situation. You should just buy a switch if anything. Have you tried using a crossover cable directly from the pc to the PS3? I'm not sure if you can have a wired and wireless connection enabled at the same time on the ps3 because I have never tried. But anyways try connecting the pc and ps3 directly, and if that doesn't work try with a switch. Like i said, no need for a router.

I'm a bit of a noob with home networking, I know all that you really need to know to do the basics (setting up network/port forwarding/ect), but I have no experience with "bridges/switches/crossovers" ect :p Do you mean connecting the PS3 to my ethernet connection on my PC? Even if the solution just lets me do wired-to-wired copying through TVersity I'll be happy as I bought a 160GB PS3 drive. Also offtopic but is - http://forum.doom9.org - Down for anyone else? Yeah. connect the ps3 directly to the ethernet on your pc. Like i said though, you will need a crossover cable. edit: yeah that site is down for me too. +Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted February 2, 2008 Author Subscriber² Share Posted February 2, 2008 (edited) Too confusing :/ I can connect the PS3 to PC with the cable, but I can't get the PS3 to pass the internet connection settings screen. (IP Address/DNS/ect) It fails on the DNS server part... I presume because it's connecting to the LAN on my PC, not the internet so to speak? Thing is my PC is wireless, under control pannel, network connections I end up with a LAN connection lighting up for the PS3 to PC cable, and I have my main "wireless internet connection" as well. +StevoFC MVC Posted February 2, 2008 MVC Share Posted February 2, 2008 First, are you using a crossover cable like i said? crossover cables are different from normal cat5(e) cables. Second, you should set up a static ip address on both your pc (wired connection) and on the ps3. Don't mess with any of the wireless setting because it will just mess it up. ;)
gadean
For a crossover connections you need to manually enter the settings. DHCP won't work! Match the gateways (can be anything), DNS, and subnet. Enter any IP on each side as long as they're different.

(im too skint to buy an official 360 wireless adapter :p) Although for the PS3 im using it on a windows laptop as I need TVersity. Won't work anyway, on the laptop the LAN connection says connected, but the PS3 fails on "internet connection" and comes back with a DNS error (yes all the settings on laptop/PS3 are the same). Looks like I will need a crossover cable then! No idea why the ethernet cable for the 360 works through the apple laptop. This work? - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/30M-CAT5E-CAT5-RJ45-...1QQcmdZViewItem
