4CxbqFxVnstmA Veteran Posted February 3, 2008 Veteran Share Posted February 3, 2008 Shift Wiki 'Contents' Beta Shift Wiki 'Contents' Beta - James Hall Submitted for comments, additions, alterations, deletions, etc. What I've done at the link above is to provide a outline/framework for topics that could be included in the Shift Wiki. I've also provided possible introductory text for some of the pages as well as examples of materials that might appear on some of those pages. Such examples could serve as templates or starting points for others who wanted to add materials. The sort of reader I'm imagining is a Neowin member who is new to Shift and probably also new to Linux. I quite like the Ubuntu Forums for their lack of an elitist vibe, and that lack of elitism is mercifully also what characterises Neowin's Linux forums. It's definitely the way to go. And having a Wiki up and running before the release of Shift 1.0 is, as others note, going to be essential, just as other forms of promotion and publicity well beforehand will help build anticipation and make a splash. Although in the Wiki I write a bit about the philosophy of Free Software and the politics of it, I don't (hopefully) come across as dogmatic. The truth is, while I support the ideas of the Free Software Movement, I use Nonfree Software on my system (multimedia codecs, Acrobat Reader, Flash, Java, etc) for convenience, and I also use some Nonfree Windows programs in wine. Personally I tend to favour Miguel de Icaza's approach, which seeks to develop Free versions of Nonfree software and Free ways of connecting to Nonfree software (embrace and extend lol). But the fact remains that a usable Shift system as far as most Neowinians go will be one which makes it easy for them to do the things they are used to doing with Windows or Macs. And some of those things are not yet available in Free versions, or at least Free versions that are developed enough to make them appealing to possible new users. So in the sections I suggest we have for Adding New Software, I think we should mix Free and nonfree software (noting restrictions that may apply to the latter) so that Neowinians can easily find cool Free software and cool nonfree software. Note: I wrote all the text there. None of it is copied from anywhere, though of course the information itself comes from my own learning about Linux and Shift from the internet and Neowin and Mike, mainly. Barney T. Administrators Posted February 4, 2008 Administrators Share Posted February 4, 2008 James, I am highly impressed! What a fine job. Let's let others look at it and add comments. Then you can complete the areas not done, and we can post. Excellent work! ;) .
