PS3 HDD Upgrade

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking of upgrading my PS3's HDD to a bigger 250GB model, but I have a question first.

If I run the backup option from the Options menu, will that backup all my games, vidoes, music, and pictures, including stuff like Warhawk, which was purchased off the PS Store?

I've got a 100GB USB HDD so that's not a problem, I just want to check before I go ahead and upgrade.

Yeah the backup option backs everything up.

I was stung though as I changed PS3 model, (went from 60GB to 40GB) and the backup option said the only thing it could install on my new 40GB was the profiles - I had to redownload everything.

If you aren't changing PS3, which you aren't, the backup option will backup everything and replace everything (Y)

why would you go from 60 to 40?

Why not?

:p

Nah here is why...

Bought a 40" 1080p Bravia (40V3000) that had a 40GB bundled in for free. I don't use BC and at the time I got my TV 60GB's were selling on Ebay for quite a bit.

Sold my 60GB PS3 on ebay with some extras for ?500.

TV cost ?1000, so overall I paid ?1000-?500 = ?500 for my TV and I still have a PS3.

I don't need BC so it means nothing to me, and the 40GB's are slightly quieter/cooler and use less power.

I went from 60 > 40 because my 60gb was giving me problems. The backup takes a ****load of time doesn't it? Plus you need like 20gb to back it up onto or something along those lines...

i put a 160gb WD HDD in my ps3 today. Works great like expected. The only thing is I'm not used to the sound it makes now. I was so used to how it sounded before that I can tell the difference. It's slightly annoying but i'll get used to it like i did before. The whole thing seems to run cooler with this new HDD in it also.

there's no reason to do that. the ps3 has a backup option that puts everything back exactly how it was, including installed things like folding@home.

easier said than done. my ps3 asks for 16gb of space, I have nothing that I can plug in and all my ext drives are ntfs.

hmm yeah, that sucks. I got mine down to about 3gb by deleting demos i didn't want and getting rid of all the stored game data. I figured it takes barely any time when you put in the game for it to dump it back on the HDD.

Does this procedure void the warranty?

no it doesn't. they even have directions for it in the instruction book that comes with the PS3.

I can find info in the manual about using 3rd party OS on PS3 (like the Ubuntu linux for PS3) but I can't find the directions for swapping the original HDD with our own larger HDD and not voiding the warranty. If it's the same manual as the online manual (http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/manualindex.html) please point it out, it's important for me!

Having put a 60gb hdd in my 40gb ps3 I can say its very straight forward to do, just a case of removing the hdd bay cover undoing 1 screw, which releases the caddy with the drive in then its a 4 screws to remove the drive from the caddy.

Very simple and easy to change.
