Last week saw plenty of frantic PlayStation speculation, the main brunt of which suggested that Sony is phasing its existing 60GB and 80GB SKUs out of production for the unveiling of a new 120-160GB model.
However, some of last week’s whisperings centred on the rumour that the Japanese electronics giant might be looking to mirror the unveiling of its Slim & Lite PlayStation Portable console by rolling out a Slim & Lite PlayStation 3 in the third quarter of 2008.

According to an initial report published by gadget magazine T3, an unnamed source has revealed that the shrunken PlayStation 3 will arrive both smaller and lighter than its bulkier counterpart - although it will still retain full Blu-ray capability and be bolstered by a 160GB HDD.

In reaction to a related enquiry by GamesIndustry.biz, Sony has now issued the stock standard “we don’t comment on rumour or speculation” reply.

Yet, while Sony may be stonewalling on offering anything tangible before it attends the upcoming Game Developers Conference in San Francisco (Feb 18-22), the company is already known for releasing compact editions of its gaming hardware to tie-in with market traction and reduced manufacturing costs.

Specifically, the PlayStation Portable has recently received a scale-down upgrade in the form of the Slim & Lite model, while the PlayStation 2 and the original PlayStation also benefited in the marketplace from the introduction of smaller hardware re-imaginings.

Expect the speculation to continue flying ahead of GDC 2008 - while the event itself might even see one or two rumours blossom into fact.

This is what I mean by a "PR response/comment" for everyone who so kindly torched me before!

A simple remark that doesn't offer a "complete" answer - It leaves you thinking something may be cooking, but it also covers Sonys back as there is no real clarification - If people run amok saying "NEW MODEL CONFIRMED", it won't look bad on Sony, but the people running away with the rumours and if a new model does come out no one is going to run about going "SONY LIES, THEY DENIED IT NOW I BOUGHT A FAT PS3 A MONTH BEFORE!"

Although to be fair on the last remark, people will always do that :p

I think it is a little too soon. A 160GB model will hit I think, but I believe it will be a fatty  Maybe slim by end of the year (announcement anyway).

It would be nice to see a Slim and lite version of the PS3, would the price be the same?

people cant realy complane when it comes to HHD size with the PS3 as you can upgrade the drive to another one with out having to pay extortionate prices for a small capacity drive.

Yea, I agree with Jimmy. The slim version will be announced later on this year or even next year when mass production of the shrunken cell processor begins and once Sony's "console development team" designs the console to be slimmer. I wouldn't be counting on it anytime soon though.

Don't see it happening at all this year. 2009 maybe? The console hasn't even had it's 1year anniversary in the Europe yet.

don't worry, even if it comes out it won't be in Europe for another year or two :p jk

Highly unlikely. If untrue, they should squash the rumor, give a definite no, so that people don't go holding off for a slim ps3. If they do come out with one @ GDC, I'd be very, very impressed.

I can see the 120/160GB model coming, but not a slim version, not this year.

That's what I think as well and to be completely honest, I don't mind the current "bulky" version.
